Uber eats customers at Jersey City can now hand over their orders from one of Avride’s autonomous pavement robots.
The launch, which started this week in New Jersey, is Uber’s last invasion of autonomous vehicles and represents an expanded relationship with Avride. The Ride-Hail and tradition giant develops AVS in its implementation in 11 cities with six partners, including Cartken, Coco, Nuro and serves robotics. It also strives to introduce Waymo’s robbery to its Austin application and Atlanta in early 2025.
Uber initially announced its collaboration with Avride to bring both the company’s delivery bots and its autonomous vehicles on the Uber platform in October 2024. Since then the two have started robotic traditions in the Austin and Dallas.
They are also planning to start Avride’s self-guiding cars in Dallas this year, which would be Avride’s first Avride Avride Roma 2022 of 2022 Ukraine. The start has also recently announced a connection to GrubHub to bring bots to campuses to all the US, starting with 100 robots at Ohio State University.
Jersey City is an interesting, though difficult, choice. Particularly in February, when a mixture of snow, rain and freezing temperatures could make it difficult for the small bots to make their deliveries.
Avride says its bots can operate in the snow and in “moderate rainfall”. A company spokesman also noted that while bots can travel up to 5 miles per hour with a series of 31 miles in a single charge, the optimum delivery range is within one to two miles.
Avride will operate the bots in a square mile from the city center Jersey City, from Hamilton Park to the historic city center to the waterfront, with plans to expand in the future. Avride declined to declare how many bots she would put on the streets of Jersey City during the launch.
A handful of restaurants will be involved, as Michelin rated Jiangnan, Rumi Turkish Grill and Gulp. Customers ordering the Uber Eats app will be able to choose between a traditional courier or Avride robot deliver their meal.
They will also be able to watch the Bot location via the Uber Eats app. Customers will receive a notice when the bot arrives and can use the app to unlock it and grab their food.
During Uber’s fourth quarter earnings last week, Managing Director Dara Khosrowhahi noted This 2024 was a turning point for the AV industry, which he estimates that it represents a trillion dollar opportunity only in the US.
Despite this optimism, he warned that AV commercialization would take a while due to many factors, including high costs for sensor equipment equipment vehicles, a fragmented regulatory environment, seasonal demand fluctuations and the need to achieve “security”.
