Hinge today launched a new AI-powered feature called “Prompt Feedback,” which aims to improve your dating profile by analyzing how you respond to messages and assessing whether it needs to be more specific or authentic.
Powered by OpenAI’s mini GPT-4o, Prompt Feedback evaluates each response and offers personalized advice tailored to help you share interesting details about yourself that can lead to more engaging conversations.
Instead of telling you exactly what to write, however, the AI offers three levels of guidance: “Go a little deeper,” “Try a little change,” and “Great answer.” The “Great Answer” rating tells you to keep your answer as is, while the other levels provide more specific suggestions, such as “Try adding a specific genre or favorite artist to show more personality.”
Prompt Feedback aims to address a common problem among singles using dating apps: many profiles feature similar, clichéd responses. For example, a common answer is: “The best way to ask me is: ask me”, which can be considered boring and may not attract many responses. According to a user survey, 63% of lovers struggle with what to write on their profiles, often resorting to stereotypical answers that don’t really reflect who they are.
The new feature comes at a difficult time for online dating, as users feel exhausted by relentless swiping, dead-end chats and frequent ghosting. Although Hinge intends to improve the overall app experience through AI tools, some users may be skeptical as they may not feel comfortable knowing that AI played a role in connecting them with potential matches.
Parent company Match Group is investing about $20 million to $30 million in artificial intelligence, with its latest initiative being an AI photo picker for Tinder to help users choose photos that are predicted to perform well on their profile. The company partnered with OpenAI last year.
