Openai announced on Friday that a research preview of Codex, the company’s most capable AI encoding agent.

Codex is powered by Codex-1, a version of the O3 AI reasoning model of the company optimized for mechanical software work. Openai says that Codex-1 produces “cleaner” code than O3, more accurately adheres to the instructions and will conduct tests in its code until the results are achieved.

Codex agent runs on a virtual computer with Sandboxed in the cloud. By connecting to GitHub, the codex environment can be preloaded with code repositories. Openai says the AI encoding agent will take anywhere in one to 30 minutes to write simple features, correct errors, answer questions about your password, and perform tests, including work.

Codex can handle multiple mechanical software work at the same time, says Openai and does not limit users from access to the computer and browser while working.

Codex releases today to subscribers to Chatgpt Pro, Enterprise and Team. Openai says users will have “generous access” to Codex to start, but in the coming weeks, the company will apply interest rate limits for the tool. Users will then be able to buy additional credits to use Codex, says OpenAi TechCrunch.

Openai plans to soon extend Codex access to Chatgpt Plus and EDU users.

AI tools for software engineers, also known as Vibe encoders, have increased in popularity in recent months. The CEO of Google And Microsoft claims that about 30% of their companies’ code is now written by AI. In February, Anthropic released his own Agentic encoding tool, Claude and April, Google informed the AI encoding assistant, Gemini Code Assist, with more practical abilities.

All this Vibe encode has made businesses behind AI encoding platforms some of the fastest growing technology. The runner, among the most popular AI coding tools, has reached the annual revenue of about $ 300 million in April and reportedly increases new $ 9 billion in new capital.

Now, Openai wants a piece of pie. Chatgpt manufacturer has been carried closed in an agreement to acquire WindsurfThe developer behind another popular AI coding platform for $ 3 billion. Codex launching very clearly shows that Openai creates its own AI encoding tools.

Users with access to Codex can find the tool on the Chatgpt side bar and assign the new coding work of the agent by typing a prompt and clicking the “Code” button. Users can also ask questions about their codebase and click the “ASK” button. Underneath the prompt, users can see other tasks that have assigned Codex to do and watch their progress.

In an update before Codex’s launch, Lead Agents Research, Josh Tobin, told TechCrunch that the company ultimately wants to achieve AI coding agents to act as “virtual teammates”, to complete autonomous duties taking human mechanics or even days to complete. Openai claims that it is already using Codex internally to discharge repeated tasks, new scaffolding and documentation designs.

The Openai product, which is Alexander Embiricos, says that many O3 security projects for the company also apply to Codex. In a blog post, Openai says that Codex will refuse reliable demands for the development of “malware”. In addition, Codex operates in an air diffusion environment without access to the wider internet or external APIs. This limits how dangerous it could be in the hands of a bad actor – but it can also hinder its utility.

It is worth noting that AI encoding agents, like all AI genetic systems today, are prone to errors. A recent study by Microsoft found that top AI encoding models, such as Claude 3.7 Sonnet and O3-MINI, fought in error tracking software. However, this does not seem to be the excitement of investors in these tools.

Openai also updates Codex Cli, the recently launched coding company of the company that is running on your terminal, with a version of the O4-MINI model that is optimized for software engineering. This model is now the default to the Codex Cli and will be available at OpenAI’s API for $ 1.50 per 1 million input brands (about 750,000 words, more than the entire Lord of Rings series) and $ 6 per 1 million output brands.

The latest attempt by Codex Marks Openai to boost ChatGPT with additional products in addition to the notorious chatbot. In the past year, Openai has added priority access to the company’s AI video platform, Sora, its research agent, deep research, and internet browser, the operator, as benefits for subscribers.

These bids could attract more users to register for a chatgpt subscription and, in the case of Codex in particular, persuade existing subscribers to pay Openai more money for increased interest rates.
