Roblox is introducing two new artificial intelligence technologies to reduce the time it takes to create avatars and 3D models, the company announced Monday. The technologies, which were built on Roblox artificial intelligence, are designed to help creators eliminate time-consuming avatar setup and texture creation steps when creating content on the Roblox platform.
The first feature is called “Avatar Auto Setup” and it simplifies the avatar creation process by automatically converting a 3D body mesh into a live, animated avatar ready for users to adopt. Once a creator selects the new feature, Roblox will run a series of tests on an asset and automatically adjust, cage, segment, and render 3D models. The auto setup maps where the various parts of the avatar’s body are to add clothing, and then maps its facial features to add facial animations. The avatar can then begin to move and interact with the environment around it.
Roblox says Avatar Auto Setup will allow creators to complete a process that traditionally takes days in just minutes.
The second feature is called “Texture Generator” and allows creators to quickly change the appearance of 3D objects using plain language text prompts. Creators can use the feature to quickly prototype new looks and bring new textures to life. Maps the object and adds a 3D texture on it that matches the object’s geometry.
For example, you can enter a text prompt to create a texture for a 3D wooden treasure chest. The generator would then create a texture that emphasizes the sharp corners of the chest and add additional elements such as wooden planks and a lock. Or you could have the function create the appearance of a red leather backpack, then create a fully 3D texture over the element.
Roblox says this process typically takes hours or days for an artist to complete. With Texture Generator, Roblox lets creators do the same thing in 15 to 30 seconds.
A creator could also use the feature to easily create multiple versions of an object in different colors or textures. For example, you could take a model of a trophy and then create one in gold, silver and bronze.
After a 3D object is created, you can choose to save it and apply it. If you don’t like what it created, you can try again and create a new result.
“Our new AI technologies help anyone from an indie developer to a professional game studio quickly create rich, engaging content on the Roblox platform – taking it from concept to shared reality, faster than ever before,” said Nick Tornow, vice president of creator engineering at Roblox, in a press release. With these tools, creators can focus on creative ideation and less on execution, enhancing their experiences to increase engagement — and ultimately, their business.”
Avatar Auto-Setup is available in alpha and Texture Generator is available in public beta and can be accessed at Roblox Studio.
