Google Photos will now let you create memes with your own images. On Thursday, Google was introduced a new AI-powered creation feature called “Me Meme” that will let you combine a photo template and a picture of yourself to create a meme image.
The new feature, which will be available first to US-based users, was initially spotted in development last October from the Android Authority blog. It was typical was announced by Google via the Photo Community website on Thursday.
According to Google, the feature is experimental, so the images generated “may not exactly match the original photo.” It recommends uploading well-lit, focused, and forward-facing photos for best results.
The plugin is meant to be just a fun way to explore your photos and experiment with Google’s Gemini AI technology, specifically Nano Banana. Google’s popular AI image model powers other AI features in the Google Photos app, such as the ability to recreate images in new styles, such as cartoons or paintings.
While this is a pretty minor addition, all things considered, these types of features help remind users to come back to the Photos app whenever they want to play with AI tools, rather than going to a competitor product.
Additionally, users tend to gravitate to features that appear in AI edits, as OpenAI found with the successful launch of the Sora app, which lets you create AI videos that can include you and your friends.
“Me Meme” isn’t fully released yet, so you might not see it in your updated Google Photos app yet. When it’s available, it’ll appear in the Create tab, Google says. A Google spokesperson told TechCrunch that the feature will be coming to US iOS and Android users in the “coming weeks.”

To use the feature, you’ll choose a template or upload your own, then tap ‘add photo’ and ‘Create’. Google notes that more standards are added over time. After the AI creates the image, you can save the photo, share it on other platforms, or press “regenerate” to have it reimagine the image a second time.
