What is a name?
A name starts the story of your company or product. A great name won’t make a crappy product skyrocket. And a terrible name won’t necessarily drown out fantastic technology. But in this world of exploding innovation in the AI industry, a great name combined with a great product will make your technology rise to the top.
Before naming your AI technology or company, you should consider several key factors that may help determine the right naming strategy:
- Is this technology at the heart of its users or does it feed into an existing brand or experience?
- How early is your AI in development and when will it really differentiate itself from others?
- Where should you drive long-term performance and brand awareness?
Should you use “AI” in your product or company name?
Let’s start with ‘AI’ itself.
In this world of explosive innovation in the AI industry, a great name combined with a great product will make your technology soar.
The acronym AI is used in many of the new market names, from established pioneer OpenAI to Elon Musk’s new xAI. This term is less likely to be a naming fad that will go out of style due to its tangible nature.
“AI” will likely follow a similar trajectory as another trendy technology term thanks to of tangible nature: “cloud”. At first, many naming experts feared that the term would eventually sound dated and overused—but more than a decade after it first took off as a household word, “cloud” has proven that it’s here to stay. It is still used in creative and descriptive product and company names (just read any tech product press release!).
Incorporating “AI” into your technology or company name can be done in a few different ways. For example, you can incorporate it more creatively into your name (eg Clarifai, AEye). While this creates more specificity and is a smart approach, it can also be difficult to create a word that is pronounced and related to your value proposition.
