Backer Indie Bookstore Bookshop.org launched one e-book platform On Tuesday, making it easier for readers to buy e -books without filled Jeff Bezos’s pockets. For years, Chokehold and Amazon’s dominance in the publishing industry were so strong that the authors and bookstores have accused the company of the operation of a monopoly.
Amazon dominates the sale of electronic books due to Kindle, which is one of the leading electronic readers on the market. Conscious consumers can turn to companies like Kobo for their material, but still there are often no options to buy e -books directly from publishers and independent bookstores, which means that readers usually resort to Amazon, Barnes & Noble or to another large retailers.
Bookshop.org and libro.fm have emerged as alternatives to Amazon, sharing a sales cut with independent bookstores around America. But for e -book readers, it is difficult to buy new titles without going through the Amazon ecosystem. Extension of bookshop.org to e -books gives consumers a long -awaited option to buy these digital books, while supporting small businesses.
“When we started bookshop.org, the vision was to support local bookstores in their battle against Amazon and other internet retailers,” said Andy Hunter, founder and chief executive of Bookshop.org, in a statement from the new service capabilities. . “This launch represents our commitment to maintain bookstores in life.”
As is the case, bookshop.org e -books are only available in the web browser or bookshop.org applications, which are available for Android and iOS.
To maximize its impact on the market, however, bookshop.org should offer ways to download its e -books to electronic readers such as Kindle.
“The bookstore selling e-books is not a treatment-all. Amazon has monopolized the e-book space for a long time to be,” I wrote Maris Kreizman book critic in Bluesky. “But it’s an important first step and this is worth celebrating.”
