Openai is ready to help develop a stunning campus Data Center 5-Gigawatt in Abu Dhabi, placing the company as a primary salaried mooring in what could become one of the largest AI infrastructure projects in the world, according to a new Bloomberg report.
The installation will extend to a stunning 10 square miles and will consume equivalent power with five nuclear reactors, forcing any existing AI infrastructure announced by Openai or its competitors. (Openai has not yet returned TechCrunch’s request for comments, but to put it in perspective, this is greater than Monaco.)
The UAE’s work, developed in collaboration with G42-a technology complex based in Abu Dhabi-is part of Openai’s ambitious Stargate project, a joint venture announced in January, which could see Openai, Softbank and Oracle Powerful computer chips to support AI growth.
While Openai’s first Stargate campus in the US – already underway in Abilene, Texas – is expected to reach 1.2 Gigawatts, this Middle East will above this quadruple capacity.
The project emerges amid wider links between the US and the UAE that have spent years in production and have made some nervous legislators.
Openai’s relationship with UAE dates from a 2023 partnership with G42 with the aim of driving AI adoption in the Middle East. During a speech earlier that year in Abu Dhabi, Openai Sam Altman’s chief executive praised the UAE, saying that “he has talked about AI Since before it was cool. ”
As with much of the AI world, these relationships are … complicated. Founded in 2018, the G42 is chaired by Sheikh Tahnoon Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the national security adviser to the UAE and the country’s youngest brother. His arms from Openai raised concerns at the end of 2023 among US officials who feared that G42 could allow Chinese government Get access to advanced US technology.
These concerns focused on G42 “active relationships“With black entities, including the Huawei Institute and Beijing Genomics, as well as links with people linked to China’s information efforts.
After pressure from US legislators, CEO of G42 I said in Bloomberg In early 2024 that the company shifted its strategy, saying: “All of our previously made China investments have already been assigned. Because of this, of course, we no longer need any physical presence of China.”
Shortly afterwards, Microsoft – an important Openai shareholder with its own broader interests in the region – announced a $ 1.5 billion investment in G42 and its chairman, Brad Smith, joined the G42 Board of Directors.
