Snapchat announced on Wednesday that Snap Map now has more than 400 million monthly active users, a new milestone for one of the key features of the application.
Started in 2017, Snap Map was initially a way for users to see their friends’ sites and browse the public from all over the world. Over time, the feature has evolved and now offers ways for users to discover local hotspots and find things to do.
Snap Map’s success is important for Snapchat, as it is a critical part of the social network and gives it a competitive advantage over opponents such as Instagram and Tiktok, both of which do not offer real -time social discovery in the way Snap Map.
Instagram is aware of this, as the post-proprietary social network has been identified to work on a “map of friends” that would allow users to see their friends’ sites in real time.
“Snap Map is one of the most used mobile maps in the world and we are excited to see our community continue to grow,” said Ceci Mourkogiannis, vice president of the product on Snap, in a statement to Techcrunch. “The Snap map helps hundreds of millions to connect with their friends and favorite places and find out what’s going on around them, making people feel more connected every day.”
The news comes as Snapchat updates Snap Map with additional functionality over the years. Last year, the company started a “steps” that allows you to see how much from the world you have explored and watch where you have traveled.
In addition, Snapchat started “promoted parts” on Snap Map as a way of users to discover new places. For brands, the promoted parts offer the ability to advertise and present all their locations on Snap Map.
