DNA style, an AI-powered fashion stylist app, creates a personalized style profile from a single selfie. The app is especially useful for people interested in seasonal color analysis, a process used to determine which colors best complement a person’s skin tone. This service can be expensive, with experts charging upwards of $300. However, the use of artificial intelligence has the potential to significantly reduce costs.
By analyzing your complexion and facial features, Style DNA can determine your seasonal color type (such as light summer or dark fall) and suggest appropriate clothing styles.
In addition, the app offers features such as personalized shopping suggestions and wardrobe management. It can suggest clothes based on your height and body type, as well as items in your existing wardrobe, which you can scan with your phone’s camera and upload to the platform. The app can even prevent impulse buys while shopping by letting you take photos of clothes and provide advice.
“[Style DNA] it creates personalized recommendations based on a person’s appearance rather than predicting what users will buy based on their past purchase history. So we’re taking this real-time personalization up a notch and we’re going to normalize data with a simple selfie,” co-founder Elena Volkova told TechCrunch.
The app recently incorporated genetic AI into its product, launching a new chatbot assistant that acts as your personal stylist. You can ask specific questions about what to wear to various events or, for example, what colors go best with green cargo pants.
Style DNA recommends clothes from over 150 retailers—H&M, Zara, Old Navy, Urban Outfitters and more—and pairs them with items you already own to create a custom outfit that matches your personal look and preferences .
As Volkova explained, the approach is similar to RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation), which involves combining Large Language Models (LLM) with traditional databases. In this case, Style DNA is trained using information such as current fashion trends, expertise from professional image consultants and a dataset of millions of images to help AI understand fabrics and understand how different patterns and cuts look on different body types. Style DNA uses ChatGPT 4.0 as its LLM.
The company has other plans in the works, including the release of a men’s version of the app and a new feature that suggests clothing based on the user’s location and current weather conditions.
Since its launch in 2022, Style DNA has amassed 3.2 million downloads, over 300,000 active users and 70,000 paying subscribers. The company previously secured €3.4 million in pre-seed funding from Black River Ventures and has a crowdfunding campaign underway.
You can download the application at the App Store and Google Play Store.
