Uber users in Austin now have a choice between a Waymo robot and a human driver.
The two companies officially started the Robotaxi service “Waymo On Uber” on Tuesday as part of a partnership that has been deepening in recent months. The launch comes just a few days before SXSW, the annual TECH, MUSIC, FILM and Comedy conference, starts at Austin.
Starting today, Uber users who enjoy a ride may match a robot. Users will still be able to choose the vehicle driven by man, not the robot, According to Uber. Both options will be the same.
Uber customers who want to enhance their chances of matching a Waymo can choose through the Uber’s “Preferences” section under “Settings”.
Uber and Waymo didn’t reveal how many robots would be in Austin’s fleet.
The companies were sharing the Waymo AVS fleet, will increase in hundreds of vehicles in both Austin and Atlanta in the coming years.

Waymo and Uber, once bitter opponents, have been in more hospitable terms in recent years. Waymo’s autonomous vehicles were available in the Uber application in Phoenix since October 2023 and the two companies expanded the partnership last year with plans to launch a more exclusive “Waymo On Uber” service to Austin and Atlanta in 2025.
The structure of the “Waymo On Uber” service provides for how each company provides for its role in the hatched autonomous vehicle industry.
According to the arrangement, Waymo will be responsible for the test of vehicles, road assistance and some aspects of rider support. Uber will manage fleet services, such as vehicle cleaning, maintenance, inspections, charging and warehouse work through a company called Moove Cars, which is re -demolished in Avomo. In 2021, Uber acquired a 30% minority interest for Moove’s European cars – not to be confused with Moove, which coincidentally manages Waymo’s AV Fleet in Phoenix.
By 2020, Uber is developing its own autonomous vehicles through its Uber Atg business. After several controversy, including a lawsuit with Waymo and a deadly crash involving an autonomous test vehicle, the company that hit Uber Atg in a complex deal with Aurora.
Uber finally installed his costumes with Waymo. A few years later the two companies will meet in more friendly terms.
Uber has spent the last two years, with its position in its population emerging market, closing in partnerships with companies such as Waymo.
