Openai’s agreement to obtain AI Windsurf Viral Codification for $ 3 billion separated on FridayAccording to The Verge.
In a shocking twist, Google Deepmind is now hiring CEO of Windsurf Varun Mohan, co -founder Douglas Chen and some of the leading start -up researchers. A Google spokesman confirmed the hiring of Windsurf leaders in a statement to TechCrunch.
“We are excited to welcome some of the top AI coding talents from the Windsurf team to Google Deepmind to promote our work in Agentic coding,” Google’s spokesman Chris Pappas said in an email on Techcrunch.
Specifically, Google does not participate in Windsurf and will have no control over the company. However, under the agreement, Google will have a non -exclusive license license in some Windsurf technologies, which means that starting the AI encoding remains free for its technology permission to others.
The deal represents the latest AI Ecosystem in reverse, in which a company hires a leading start-up talent and allows its technology, but does not acquire the company. Google has previously carried out a similar deal to hire CEOS.AI CEO Noam Shazeer, as well as Microsoft to hire Mustafa Suleyman. These agreements have helped several large technology companies increase their position in the AI race without planning regulatory control.
“We are excited to be involved in Google Deepmind along with some of the Windsurf teams,” Mohan and Chen said in a statement to TechCrunch. “We are proud of what Windsurf has built for the last four years and we are excited to see it going with the world -class team and start the next phase.”
Since Friday, Windsurf’s header Jeff Wang will take over as temporary chief executive of the start, announced to a Post in Social Media. Most of Windsurf’s 250 people are not headed to Google Deepmind and will continue to provide AI encoding tools for business customers.
Openai’s agreement to acquire Windsurf was reportedly a significant point in the Chatgpt Maker Convention with Microsoft. Microsoft currently has access to all the intellectual property of Openai. However, Openai did not want its biggest supporter to get Windsurf’s AI encoding technology, according to previous reports from The Journal Wall Street.
Earlier on Friday, Fortune reported that the The Exclusive Period in Openai’s Offer to Obtain Windsurf had expiredwhich means that windsurf would now be free to explore other offers. It seems that Windsurf didn’t wait long.
In recent months, Windsurf has been one of the hottest new AI coding companies on the market. In April, the ARR of the start reached about $ 100 million, TechCrunch was previously reported, from about $ 40 million earlier. This rapid growth attracts suitors such as Openai and obviously Google.
Adding Mohan, Chen and other Windsurf leaders could significantly enhance Google’s ability to manufacture AI encoding tools. In recent months, AI models have focused more on offering AI coding applications to attract developers. ANTHROPIC has significantly reinforced its rear -offs on the back of the AI encoding tool, Claude Code, while Openai continues to put Codex, AI encoding agent, software engineers.
Windsurf, on the other hand, remains in a much more uncertain position as a result of this agreement. Other newly formed AI companies that have seen their hired leaders have fought to maintain the same momentum they had in advance. AI scale lost customers as a result of its agreement with MetaWhile the flexion had to rotate entirely by the Consumer AI after its agreement with Microsoft.
It seems likely that windsurf could suffer similar fate.
