The next -generation version of the Apple of the popular Carplay Infotainment software finally begins three years after its announcement.
The company said On Thursday that this new version of Carplay – now known as “Carplay Ultra” – will begin to be released on new Aston Martin vehicles in the US and Canada, about half a year late.
While still powered (wirelessly) by an iPhone, the Carplay Ultra undertakes both the main entertainment screen and the digital dashboard in front of the driver and is deeper integrated into the vehicle systems. This means that the new Carplay software will show things such as vehicle speed, fuel miles, travel information and water temperature.
Carplay Ultra will also be able to control certain vehicles – provided that drivers have an iPhone 12 or later run at least iOS 18.5. Meanwhile, some functions such as backup cameras will still be able to “outsmart“The UI Carplay.
Apple said some existing and compatible Aston Martin vehicles will get the Carplay Ultra “in the coming weeks through a software update available to local representatives.” The company also said the brands Hyundai, Kia and Genesis have registered to make it compatible with their vehicles.
The launch of Carplay Ultra helps Apple even the competition field with Google, which has been helping cars for years transporting cars with a built -in version of the Android Auto operating system. Just this week, Google announced that it has brought the genetic AI Gemini to Android Auto.
Apple implied that the slow growth of the Carplay Ultra was partly related to the work needed to make the software to fit the “unique philosophies and visual design” of its car industry. The company told its press release on Thursday that it has created these “customized issues” in “close cooperation” with the design team of automakers such as Aston Martin. He also said that drivers would be able to adapt the “colors and wallpapers of the themes to match their individual tastes”.
It is an ambitious jump forward by the basic version of Carplay, which has proven to be so popular that one noise It starts almost every time an automaker avoids software.
But growth is still far from what Apple initially teases the 2022 Worldwide Developers, when it showed a transparency of 14 car logos and said these brands were “excited to bring this new carplay vision to customers”. At least one of these, Mercedes-Benz, has said it since I will not use the new Carplay Ultra.
