At Apple’s WWDC 2024, the company unveiled a handy new feature for Apple TV+ called InSight. The feature will allow viewers to learn actor names and song titles as they appear on screen.
The new Apple TV+ feature appears to be similar to Amazon’s X-ray feature, where users get an overview of actor bios and behind-the-scenes information while watching TV shows and movies. What makes InSight stand out, however, is its Shazam-like functionality, which highlights the song playing in the TV show or movie and gives users the option to add it to an Apple Music playlist to listen to later .
To use “InSight,” Apple TV+ subscribers can use their remote to bring up a screen with real-time actor names and character information. They can create a background and filmography page for a particular actor. There will also be a direct link to access the soundtrack on Apple Music.
Apple also announced several updates to tvOS, the software that runs on Apple TV. This includes improving the audio experience by providing enhanced dialogue to TV speakers, receivers, AirPods and other Bluetooth devices. Enhance Dialogue was previously only available to users with HomePod speakers.
Thanks to machine learning and computational audio, Enhance Dialogue also gets smarter with tvOS 18. According to the company, there will be better voice clarity over background noise, music and action scenes on Apple TV 4K.
Another feature of tvOS 18 coming to Apple TV is that it will automatically enable subtitles for certain situations, such as when the volume is muted, the language in the show or movie does not match the language of the device, or when a user wants to replays a scene.
tvOS 18 will be available later this year.
Also during the event, Apple revealed a revamp of the Photos app in iOS 18, as well as VisionOS 2 for Vision Pro and a Calculator app, with all new bells and whistles, for iPad.
