Crypto Giant Coinbase has confirmed that its systems have been violated and customer data, including government -issued identity documents, have been stolen.

In a legally required deposit With US regulators, Coinbase said a hacker this week told the company that they had received information about customer accounts and asked the company in return for not posting the stolen data.

Coinbase said the hacker “received this information by paying many contractors or employees working in support roles outside the United States to gather information from Coinbase internal systems that had access to their work responsibilities”. Support staff are no longer employed, the company said.

The deposition stated that Coinbase systems detected the malicious “previous months” activity, and that “warned customers whose information was potentially accessible to avoid abuse of any compromised information”.

Coinbase said he would not pay the hacker ransom. According to a social post By chief executive Brian Armstrong, hackers asked $ 20 million from the company.

The company said the hacker stole customer names, postal and email addresses, phone numbers and the latest squares of users’ social security numbers. The hacker also received the numbers of bank accounts and certain banking identifiers, as well as the identity documents issued by the Customer Government, such as the licenses and passports of the driver. The stolen data also includes account balance data and trading stories.

The company stated that some corporate data, such as internal documentation, were also stolen during the violation.

When reached for comments, Coinbase spokesman Natasha Labranche told TechCrunch that the number of affected customers is less than 1% of its 9.7 million monthly customers, per per The company’s latest annual report expiring in March 2025.

Coinbase has said it expects to incur from about $ 180 million to $ 400 million on the repair of incidents and customer refunds.
