Cheaper, lighter and denser: TrI ID defines an ideal battery. No one has designed a perfect cell enough, but a secret start thinks he has found a new material that solves at least two of these challenges.

Daqus energy It has worked quietly for the last four months, refining a compound known as TAQ that promises to be cheaper and lighter than the competitive battery materials.

“We haven’t seen a measurement in which TAQ is not compared to the established bodies,” Harish Banda, co -founder and chief executive of Daqus, told Techcrunch. The company was launched by MIT, where the material research was partially funded through a partnership with Lamborghini.

There are some warnings that Banda offers freely: the company still escalates TAQ production and has just started working for the type of cells that could fall into an EV. In addition, many promising batteries have died on the way to commercialization.

But the upward trend is strong enough that Daqus emerges from Stealth with a $ 6 million seed round led by Morningside with the participation of anonymous individual investors.

Daqus material replaces the descent to a lithium -ion battery. In a typical cell, the descent is made of nickel-Maganese-Cobalt (NMC) or iron phosphate (better known as LFP). NMC cells are more expensive, but offer greater energy density and greater range in electric vehicles. LFP cells are cheaper but heavier.

US and European automakers favored NMC for their UN, but have begun to go to LFP to reduce costs. The problem is that the overwhelming majority of LFP descent materials are manufactured in China, making non-US-made HKEs manufactured by the US that want to qualify for tax credits.

DAQUS material works with, two-tetraaminobenzocinone or Taq for a short period of time, not using expensive critical minerals such as nickel or cobalt. Instead, it is entirely of widely available carbon -based compounds.

For the first step in the construction process, the two molecules used by the company are already used to make dyes and fertilizers. “It is absolutely cheap dirt,” Banda said, noting that the company buys small lots of $ 1 per kilogram. “So you can only imagine what this means when you buy a tone.”

In addition, the process used to compose a Taq descent uses much less energy. Making things only requires heating at 120 degrees C, about 700 to 800 degrees C lower than LFP or NMC Cathodes, Banda said.

In the production line, TAQ can be deposited using existing equipment. But there is another opportunity to reduce costs: Existing growth equipment can also work with TAQ. This would allow battery manufacturers to use water as a solvent instead of NMP, a toxic solvent that must be captured and recycled.

Overall, the properties of TAQ have let Banda feel confident that the material can underestimate the cheapest lithium -ion batteries on the market. “If someone says that LFP batteries are at $ 50 per kilowatt. We will be cheaper than that,” Banda said. “Just how much we need to understand.”

Daqus produces coins in its laboratory space in Massachusetts and its internal tests have shown that TAQ is durable. TAQ -based batteries can be charged and unloaded 2,000 times and maintain at least 80% of its original capacity and are constant at high temperatures. These small batteries also charge at a rate that, when they arise at the UN, would allow six minutes to be charged.

If there is a warning, it is that Cathodes TAQ take up more space than NMC, although they are competitive with LFP. He also points out that because the material is lighter, the ECs designed around it could also be lighter and would need fewer batteries overall. This could give a sufficient TAQ range to compete with NMC while being cheaper and lighter.

Sports cars may realize the benefits earlier. Weight was one of the biggest electricity sanctions: it is incredibly easy to make an EV that is lightning fast in a straight line, but by doing one that handles well on a race? This has proven to be more difficult. A lightweight charging battery could go a long way in the direction of electric sports cars feel separate and all cars more effective.

“Many car companies in the world are trying to make electric cars,” Banda said. “What is the difference between a Rolls Royce over a Tesla? Surely you have better positions, but in terms of the car’s core, it was the engine. Now, it seems to be the battery.”
