Openai has announced plans to open its first office in India, a few days after the launch of a chatgpt project tailored to Indian users, as it seems to use the country’s rapidly growing AI market.
On Friday, the company said it would set up a local team in India and open a corporate office in the capital of New Delhi in the coming months. The move is based on recent attempts to hire Openai in the area. In April 2024, the company appointed former Truecaller and Meta Executive Pragya Misra, as public policy and corporate relations lead to India. Openai also brought to former Twitter chief India Rishi Jaitly as a senior adviser to facilitate discussions with the Indian government on politics AI.
India-The second largest internet and smartphone market in the world after China-is a natural application for Openai, which competes with technological giants such as Google and Meta, as well as AI upstarts such as embarrassment, everyone wants to use the country’s mass basis.
The company said it has begun to hire a local team to “focus on reinforcing relations with local partners, governments, businesses, developers and academic institutions”. It plans to receive feedback from Indian users to make its products for the local public and even create characteristics and tools specifically for the country.
“The opening of our first office and building a local group is an important first step in our commitment to make Advanced AI more accessible to the whole country and build AI for India and India,” said Sam Altman, chief executive of Openai, in a statement.
Openai also announced that it will host its first education in India this month and the first day of developer in the country later this year.
While India is clearly a meaningful market for Openai, the company faces key challenges – including how to convert free users to paying subscribers. Like other major AI players, you must browse the obstacle of revenue in a sensitive South Asian market.

India is not the first place in Openai’s office. The company previously opened offices in markets including JapanSingapore, and South Korea. Openai opponent also consider Japan a higher priority market than India to Epirus and recently Set his office in Tokyo instead of New Delhi.
One of the reasons why these AI companies do not prioritize India as an early market is the difficulty in securing business customers, a Silicon Valley -based investor said.
“Openai’s decision to create a presence in India reflects the country’s growing leadership in the digital innovation and adoption of AI,” Indian IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a prepared statement. “As part of India’s mission, we build the ecosystem for reliable and without AI exclusion and welcome Openai’s cooperation to promote this vision to ensure the benefits of AI reach every citizen.”
