Since began about 20 years ago, speedtest.net has been one of the most popular tools used to measure internet speeds. However, Doug Suttles, the founder and former CEO of Ookla, the network test company behind Speedtest, thought that the measuring speed was not enough to tell people that they wanted to learn about their internet connections.
That’s why suttles is now starting a new tool called Sphere This measures the delay, the loss of packages, the jitter and the speed to give you a measure of how firm your internet connection is.
Suttles, who started the ORB with the Ookla Exec Jamie Steven in 2023, said Speedtest.net was the right tool for his time, but as the internet speeds became less issue around the world, he felt that people needed new, more holistic ways to evaluate their internet connections.
“Speed tests are like the bulletin in your car, which will tell you that you went through oil as soon as your car was broken. We wanted to build a dashboard to tell you that you are low in oil so you can fix this problem,” Suttles told TechCrunch.
ORB controls network connections for three basic variables: response, measured by a combination of delay, jitter, latent status and package loss. Reliability, which measures the response over time and the loss of packages over time. and speed, which is your usual download and upload speeds. All of these variables can be measured at different intervals – a minute, five minutes, one hour and 24 hours.
By combining all three variables, the tool gives you a score to indicate how firm your network connection is. A scoring sphere over 80 shows a good connection. 70-80 means you have a ok connection. And if you have something beneath it, you may have remarkable problems.
If your rating is below 80, the app suggests steps you can take to improve network performance. Starting says it uses LLMS to show descriptions of key issues and suggestions related to resolving them.
