Nearly a decade after becoming a digital time capsule for the moments of your life, Snapchat is going to put a value on the Memories feature. The company announced last week that it covers free storage of memories in 5GB.
If your memories exceed the limit, you should either export them or register for one of the new Snapchat storage plans to keep them.
The company told TechCrunch in an email that the Introductory Storage Provision offers up to 100GB of storage for $ 1.99 per month. Snapchat+ users will reach up to 250GB of storage as part of the monthly subscription of $ 3.99, while Snapchat Platinum users will receive 5TB as part of $ 15.99.
If you are above the limit but do not register for a plan, your older snaps will be stored, and the most recent will be deleted to stay within the storage threshold.
Although the company has given users 12 months of temporary storage for memories exceeding the 5GB threshold, some users are preventively choosing to export their memories instead of paying.
We will guide you through the two options you have to maintain your Snapchat memories.
Export of Snapchat memories to your device’s camera roll
One way to save Snapchat memories is taking them on the camera roll. Although this can be done directly from your phone, you are confined to 100 batches at a time, which can be a time -consuming job if you have thousands of stored snaps.

However, this could be a good way of choosing snaps you really want to save.
Here you have to do:
- Open the Snapchat app and select the “Memories” icon next to the camera button.
- Press the “Select” option in the upper right corner.
- Choose up to 100 memories you want to keep.
- Press the “Export” button that appears at the bottom right of your screen.
- Select “Download” to save them to your camera roll.
Repeat this process to save another batch of 100 memories.
Download Snapchat data
If you do not want to spend time by exporting your memories to 100 batches, you can use Snapchat’s “Download My Data” tool to save your memories file and email it to a .zip file.
Here you have to do:
- Open the Snapchat app and go to your profile.
- Press the Settings icon on the upper right side of your screen.
- Move down to the “My Data” option.
- Select Memories, HTML and JSON file options. (Remove the selection below, unless you also want to save additional information, such as chat history, user data and more. You just have in mind, it may be more difficult to find your memories later in the .zip.)
- Press “Next”.
- Select the “All Time” option when you are asked to choose a range of dates for export.
- Confirm your email address.
- Press “Submit”.
The time it takes to get your data may vary depending on how much you saved.
