X says it is going to take action against creators who post AI videos of armed conflict without disclosing that the content was created by AI. On Tuesday, X’s chief product officer, Nikita Bier, was announced that people who use AI technology to mislead others in this way will be booted from the company’s Creator Revenue Sharing Program for a period of three months (90 days).
If they continue to post misleading AI content after the ban is lifted, they will be permanently banned from the program.
“In times of war, it’s critical that people have access to authentic information on the ground. With today’s AI technologies, it’s trivial to create content that can mislead people,” Bier wrote on X. “From now on, users who post AI-generated videos of armed conflict — without adding a disclaimer that it was made with AI — will be deleted from Resus.90.”
X says it will detect misleading posts through a combination of tools used to detect productive artificial intelligence content, as well as through its crowdsourced fact-checking system, Community Notes.
X Creator Revenue Sharing Program offers creators the ability to generate income by posting on the platform and sharing ad revenue if their posts are popular. While designed to boost the amount of engaging content found on X, critics of the program say it incentivizes creators to post sensational content such as clickbait or other posts designed to provoke outrage. Some also criticized its lax content controls and its requirement that creators pay X subscribers to participate.
Given how easy it is to use artificial intelligence to create misleading photos and videos, banning X from financially rewarding creators for this type of content is only a limited solution. Outside of war, AI tools are often used to create political disinformation or promote misleading products influence economy — all will still be allowed under the new policy.
