Passbolt Increases $ 8 Million For Open Source Password Manager

Password managers have become common at this point. But businesses often have different needs from consumers. Teams, in the end, often have to share credentials to access resources, while all teams and security teams need ways to control who has access to them. How muchAnnounces a round of $ 8 million on Thursday, aims to become the de facto password manager for small and medium -sized businesses, with ambitions to serve entrepreneurs in the long run.

The Passbolt team, led by CEO of France Kevin MullerHe argues that most organizations are not well served by what they claim to be more consumer -oriented tools such as Bitwarden or 1password. “You look at Bitwarden, for example, or even 1password, what they do is that they have, at one end, a simple password management for the workforce and then built a secret manager – or bought a secret manager – for the Devops teams, and then build something else for authentication, “Muller said. “So it is quite fragmented. And one of the problems is that these tools, most of the time, cannot talk to each other. They are very autonomous.”

Muller previously founded the e -learning platform click on French and ran a web development counseling in India. He founded Passbolt in 2017, along with Remy Bertot and Cédric Alfonsi, having previously original issuance of the open source community for a few years.

The service is partially based on HolderThe popular open source password manager, but as Muller pointed out, Keepass was never built for them. Keepass itself is already widely popular with technical teams, but it essentially creates a single static archive where the credentials are safely stored, he noted. This can easily be shared among the members of the group, but because of this, there is no way to easily check who has access to it and there is no way to control (or recall it), among other things.

“What we wanted was more collaboration, more security and more control,” Muller said. “By checking I mean: How do we install it behind our protection wall on a server we manage? How do we have it? How do we share granular passwords, secrets and all kinds of credentials?”

During the last few years, the group added features such as inherent desktop applications, password expiration and spins, a tool for receiving two -factor authentication codes, and access -based access controls for the use of the interface user of Passbolt. One of the next features on the horizon is the support for passage management.

In the long run, the Passbolt team would also like to challenge the services of more privileged access services (PAM), such as Cyberk, Muller told me.

Today, Passbolt offers a free Community version that users can host, as well as a self-esteem ($ 49/month for 10 seats) with additional features such as LDAP providing, supporting a signed, logging records and activity records more. Like many other open source projects, Passbolt also offers a guest solution (starting at $ 54 a month for 10 seats).

About 38,000 teams use the free version, with 2,000 payments for Passbolt services. The majority of users (75%) choose to self-esteem.

As Muller pointed out, the code is regularly checked and Passbolt is a type II certified.

Passbolt, based in Luxembourg and currently has about 30 employees, has reached profitability in the summer of 2024, but the team has decided to increase in order to benefit from current growth and keep up with the demands of features by its users.

The Company’s series A of the company was driven by the Netherlands Airbridge shares. Existing investors EXPON CAPITAL digital technology Capital, Scale; Seeder; DevotedBondi Capital, Carricha Capital, and Lban They also participated, along with investors of angels such as Christophe Bianco (co -founder of Excellium Services) and Xavier Buck (co -founder of Datacenter Luxembourg).

“Legacy passwords such as Keepass or Bitwarden and privileged access management solutions, such as Cyberrk, are lacking for today’s interoperative, distributed and flexible teams,” said Rick Van Boekel, CEO of Airbridge Equity Partners. “Passbolt’s organic attraction in various industries confirms the demand for a more cooperative solution and impressive SAAS measurements prove that Passbolt users are happy with the solution offered.”
