Last month, Apple offered more picture of her work on her consumer robotics through a research paper This argues that characteristics such as expressive movements are the key to optimizing human interaction. “Like most animals,” the report begins, “people are particularly sensitive to movement and subtle changes in movement.”

To show its point, Apple pays tribute to Pixar, another company founded with the help of late Steve Jobs. Since Pixar first made his debut debut A 1985 short -term short filmLuxo Jr. It has served as a long -lasting studio mascot. For her research, Apple also chose a lamp for her own “non -anthropomorphic” example. After all, the lamps do not have obvious human characteristics, but they can be done to behave in familiar ways.

“For robots to interact more naturally with people,” notes paper, “the design of robot movements should also incorporate expressive properties such as intent, attention and emotions, along with traditional functional estimates such as fulfillment of work and the effectiveness of time ”.

A video Released in conjunction with paper it presents some of these movements. It is not surprising that they mostly reflect Pixar’s creation. This includes the same similar parts, with the lampshade serving as the head, while the arm stands for a neck.

The most interesting part of the video, in terms of possible productivity, comes as a user asking the robot. In the simplest, the anonymous lamp robot acts as a more kinetic version of a homepod, Amazon echo or other smart speaker. The person facing the lamp asks a question and the robot responds to Siri’s voice.

A screen separation video highlights the importance of expressive movements. Asked how the weather is out, a version just states the answer. The other rotates his head to look out of the window as if the view that the robot can pull. It’s a simple example, but what leads home how even minor movements hit on our lizard brain Parody. Familiarizing expressive movements helps to create a connection between human and object.

Apple’s survey arrives, as the company is expected to increase its efforts for robotics consumer before planning a more advanced smart home system. It is clear how these lessons can be applied to make a robotic distributor more expressive. It is similar to the approach Amazon has received with the Astro robot. However, the inclusion of a non-anthropomorphic form of research suggests that the robot can be even less humanoid than Amazon.

Rumors surrounding the upcoming release described the node as “a robot arm with an iPad connected”. It is easy to see how the lamp formula could be applied there. Of course, Apple’s Robotic Consumer Department seems to be still the research phase. Much can happen from now on and then, from a significant shift of the Factor type to a decision to pull the plug to the project before the start.
