Vertical Aerospace Has A Plan To Utilize Europe's Technological Moment

Russia’s war in Ukraine and President Donald Trump’s reluctance to support NATO allies has led to a boost to funding European defense technology. And in all industries, newly formed businesses take the opportunity.

One such company could be the vertical aerospace start-based start-up, which develops EVTOL aircraft (electric vertical take-off and landing) mainly for Air-Taxi functions. The start has over 1,500 specifications for VX4 Evtol by customers such as American Airlines, Japan Airlines, Gol and Bristow.

Now the vertical talks more publicly about the opportunities in defense and the logistics. On Monday, Vertical took its first public step by announcing a plan to develop a VX4 hybrid electrical variant.

“We always knew that this aircraft would be capable of defense because of its nature,” said Vertical Aerospace Stuart Simpson CEO in TechCrunch, noting that the hybrid version of Evtol promises a series of 1,000 miles. This is a ten times an increase in Evtol.

VTols create good defense aircraft because they have low noise and low heat signatures. They can also grow autonomously or remote, Vertical capabilities report that its aircraft will have one day. Vertical has worked with Honeywell, who is underdeveloped Autonomous aircraft for the US Army, to create aircraft control and aircraft management systems for its vehicles.

Vertical’s hybrid-electric strategy is not unique for starting. In December 2024, Archer Aviation based in California announced a new unit dedicated to defense along with plans to work with the weapons manufacturer and the creation of a hybrid aircraft for critical military missions. The news raised the Archer another $ 430 million in shares from existing investors.

And while Simpson insists that the vertical does not come out with the news of the hybrid vehicle now from opportunism – starting for its hybrid aircraft in secrecy for 18 months – it’s definitely a good time.

The European Defense Defense has shifted over the last two years, as the block prioritizes home solutions. Last year, $ 1 billion in business capital was first invested in the industry, a five -fold increase since 2018. Specialized Defense Defense Funds have also emerged, such as the NATO Innovation Fund € 1 billion and Estonian and Estonian SmartCap Defense Fund 100m euros. Lithuania is ready to spend 5% to 6% of total GDP on defense spending, including newly established businesses through the dominant VC Coinvest Capital.

In this scene, the vertical is basically without European opponents in the Evtol industry. At the end of 2024, Germany’s Volocopter, which was filed for bankruptcy and Lilium, stopped businesses. Vertical says this makes it uniquely positioned to meet the growing needs of defense throughout Europe. And now, with his upcoming hybrid-electric potential, he could become a key player in the midst of growing defense budget and increased focusing on dominant industrial capacity.

To understand the moment properly, however, the vertical will probably need to raise more chapters. The start has raised $ 468.8 million to date, mainly through its reverse merger in 2021 and subsequent pipes (private investment in public funds), according to the Pitchbook. More recently, in January, the vertical increased $ 90 million through a second direct public offering.

This puts vertically below Joby Aviation ($ 2.82 billion to date), Archer Aviation ($ 3.36 billion) and Beta Technologies ($ 1.15 billion).

“We have spent about $ 100 million a year,” Simpson said. ‘Our competitors spend $ 400 [million] in $ 500 million. We have developed this hybrid within the $ 100 million folder. We are incredibly effective and focused. ”

Sagittarius Operating expenses in 2024 Made a top $ 500 million, a piece of which went toward resolving A dispute with Boeing and Wisk Aero. Joby’s Operating expenses last year Almost reached $ 600 million.

Taking this, both Archer and Joby are largely investing in construction so that they can soon produce their Evtols on a scale. Simpson said Vertical is not working yet to increase the construction before ending the certification, which it expects to be completed in 2028.

“You can burn a lot of money going to build and get a robot load,” Simpson said. “This is not something you want to rob. These are extremely complicated. What you need to do is understand how you build them and then … build a few hundred of them by hand.

The vertical aims to have the first certified pre-designation for the VX4 Evtol built next year, with plans to build another handful after that.

“The hybrid energy train will be incorporated into the next -generation VX4 variant with flight tests planned to start next year,” Simpson said on Tuesday during the first quarter of Vertical earnings.

Vertical flight tests are only performed by a pilot, partly due to the stricter nature of UK flight regulations. Joby and Beta have already made pilot flights, but Archer has not yet – though he plans to do so with emphasis.

When it comes to customers for Vertical’s military offers, the company has not yet secured.

“We had a lot of deep, important discussions with government services and customers,” Simpson said. “But we are the only European player in the field. So he gives us a truly unique place.”
