Apple expands the age rating system for applications. The company on Thursday said It has updated the age rating system to add 13+, 16+ and 18+ ratings with the existing 4+ and 9+ scores and remove the 12+ and 17+ areas. In addition, application developers should answer a new set of age questions to help detect sensitive content in their application. Developers will also be able to update the age ratings of their applications in one of the new options if needed.

The company says it has automatically updated all applications and games throughout the Applications Store to align with the new system, which is available in Beta’s Beta 26, iPados 26, Macos Tahoe 26, TVOS 26, Visionos 26 and Watchos 26.

As part of the up -to -date system, developers should inform Apple about their in -application and application capabilities, answer questions about medicine and well -being, and reveal whether their application or play contains violent issues. Apple will then calculate the appropriate age rating, which developers can view and modify the App Store Connect.

Evaluations are meant to offer parents more specific instructions on applications that want to download their children and will prevent children from installing applications that exceed their age range. On the Apple side, the App Store will also not have some applications in areas such as editorial tabs, today, games and applications if they are not suitable for the child using the device.

Extensive age areas are part of a broader information on child safety initiatives announced earlier this year. For parents, Apple facilitates the creation of children’s accounts and the exchange of information about their children’s ages. This data will be shared with application developers to help provide age -appropriate content. (Some of the changes for children’s accounts were first provided to the 18.4 Beta Public Beta, earlier this year.)

App Store product listings will also be informed to include more information to help guardian decisions about whether an application or toy is suitable for the child or adolescent. For example, the Guardians will be informed if the application has content or ads produced by the user, both of which could expose younger children to adult content. In addition, they will be informed if an application offers built -in parental controls.

Increasing the score of the application of an application could reduce its visibility and distribution, which could encourage application developers to introduce parental controls or other age -appropriate experiences.

Changes to the App Store conclude as legislative differences develop both in the state and the state federal Levels on how children should be protected on the Internet, with the introduction of US states New accounts and laws This would require the applications store operators to control the ages of children to obtain parental consent to obtain applications. Apple and Google would have preferred app manufacturers themselves to handle the age verification process, but larger technology companies such as Meta have press For applications for verification.

Apple’s solution is a system that will protect the child’s personal information, such as their date of birth, offering an API developer that gives them access to the age information they need to adapt their application experience. Because this information will be provided by the parent during a new device adjustment, it is more likely to be accurate than if children enter an application directly into an application, as children can lie for their age to access the full experience of an application.

However, for this to work, developers will have to choose to integrate with the new API.
