If you have heard of Trump’s AI Action Plan and wondering who really benefits you are not alone.

In today’s episode of Equity, Rebecca Bellan fell with AMBA KAK and Dr. Sarah Myers West of the AI Now Institute, a think tank focused on the social impact of AI and the unification of power in the technology industry. Their recent reportcalled artificial power, determines the political economy that drives today’s frenzy AI and what is at stake for everyone else.

Artificial power pushes behind what AI now calls the “too big to fail” myth, arguing that AI companies are throwing billions into mass computing infrastructures and fundamental models, often with government support, despite unstable business models and limited public accountability.

This impulse on the scale and reach the AGI, or artificial general intelligence, before 2030 has real consequences that do not disappear with the promises that AI will someday solve humanity’s toughest problems. In the short term, societies are already facing environmental degradation, discrimination algorithms, disassembling democratic institutions, lack of privacy and the risk of national security.

Kak and the West say these results are the result of a series of options, not an unexpected reality.

“The future we sell is not inevitable,” Kak explained.

Listen to the full episode to hear:

  • The increasing unification of AI and the way it reflects Big Tech’s power dynamics.
  • Because Silicon Valley covers the AI AI agenda and the challenges of AI regulation.
  • The disconnection between the AGI advertising campaign and the current damage to the real world.
  • What could look like a Democratic, Right and Responsible Future of AI.

Equality will return on Friday with our weekly news Roundup news, so stay tuned.
