The Battery Material Starter Group14 announced on Wednesday that it was closed a $ 463 million funding round to expand its production footprint, a sign that investors are still confident in the future of electric vehicles.
The start manufactures silicon ascent materials, which significantly enhance the storage of lithium -ion batteries. Group14 It is currently exploiting three factories, two in the US and one in South Korea.
Despite the headlines for increasing demand for electric vehicles, the global lithium -ion batteries market remains strong. In the next decade, more than 15% per year, quintupling in size is expected to increase, according to in priority survey. Both automakers and investors are still pursuing companies working in technology that will make the EC more effective and affordable.
The round was driven by the SK battery manufacturer involving Atl, Lightrock, Microsoft, Porsche and Omers. Along with the round, Group14 also announced that it had a “full ownership” of a joint venture with SK in South Korea, which includes the Bam 3 plant. SK had 75% of JV. When asked if the value of the JV transaction was included in the entire D series, Group14 spokesman Kristen Caron said the company “does not reveal additional details about the round”.
Silicon has long been targeted as a possible replacement for graphite, today’s rise material, as it can contain up to 10 times more electrons. But with every load and discharge, net silicon ascents tend to collapse as the material extends and conventions, which is more durable.
The newly established businesses such as the team14 and the Sila competitor have hosted the silicon tendency to swell by creating structures that keep silicon in place without sacrificing the overall integrity of the rise. Group14 material is a scaffolding with internal gaps holding silicon, giving it a margin of extension.
The material itself can be mixed with graphite or replacing it entirely. Many companies are still choosing the latter because of the inherent stability of toner. However, the most silicon used, the more energy can store a single cell. Group14 states that its material can improve energy density by up to 50% and reduce rapid charging times less than 10 minutes.
