FieldAn Irvine Robotic Starter, based in California, has raised $ 405 million in many previously not-announced rounds to develop what it calls “fundamental built-in AI models”–essential brain robots designed to environments.

The company announced funding on Wednesday. The latest round brought $ 314 million in August and realized by Bezos Expeditions, Prysm and Temasek. Fieldai’s other supporters include Khosla Ventures, Intel Capital and Canaan Partners, among others.

Unlike the traditional AI that processes text or images, the built -in AI refers to AI that controls natural robots moving through a real environment. Fieldai creates “Field Foundation models”, which are integrated AI models of generally rooted in physics. This approach enables robots the opportunity to learn quickly and adapt to new environments, while realizing the danger, Fieldai’s founder and chief executive, Ali Agha, told TechCrunch in an interview.

“The mission is to build a single brain robot that can generalize in different types of robots and a different set of environment,” AGHA said. “To get there, you need to manage the risk and safety as you go to these new environments and this is a fundamental gap in robotics, that traditional models and traditional approaches have never been designed to manage this risk and safety.”

AGHA said the key to getting a robot to be able to learn safely in new environments is to add a layer of physics to these AI models. This addition gives the robots a second set of information to pull from to make decisions – especially in a new environment – as opposed to simply reacting to what a model says to make it later, as the traditional LLMS does.

He added that while a small amount of AI hallucinations are not harmful in some cases, it may be for robots working in dangerous environments or in parallel with humans.

“Suddenly you start to have this feeling, how much I know, and if I don’t know something, or if I decide, how sure I am in it,” Agha said. “Once [the] The network begins to access it, starting to make much safer decisions. Not only does this spit on this, “hey, here is the next kind of action”, but it tells you how confident it is, and you as a customer can set this danger threshold and [the] The robot will be reactive to it. ”

AGHA has been working on this idea for decades in various roles in places ranging from NASA to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He decided to start Fieldai when he achieved a technological discovery that allowed a brain robot to work on different types of robots that performed both the same and the individual actions.

Since the launch of the company in 2023, Fieldai has secured contracts in all industries, including construction, energy and urban tradition. The company refused to disclose customers by name.

Financing will support research and growth while helping the company increase production to develop its models to its customers and further extend its approach abroad.

Agha compares Fieldai’s approach to human evolution. “Expanded so you can do different different tasks in different environments and you have the ability to learn quickly, [and] We believe it is a necessity in robotics. Yes, you can definitely optimize for a particular case, but this is not the market we follow. ”
