Rivia has officially broken ground In its long -standing factory near Atlanta, Georgia, which will allow the company one day to make up to 400,000 of the next generation electric vehicles.

The company held a shovel ceremony on Tuesday, where CEO RJ Scaringe was joined by agricultural officials, including Governor Brian Kemp. However, as TechCrunch first said in July, the company is still watching the first quarter of 2026 for an official construction date, with vehicles production starting in 2028. Most of the thing is now preparing, such as connecting electric systems and water supply and access road.

Rivian Projects The plant will eventually create 7,500 permanent jobs, with 2,000 construction work created during the construction process. Since June 30, the company had created 47 full -time jobs and invested about $ 80 million in the project, according to Email messages received by TechCrunch earlier this year.

In addition to factory jobs, Rivian said on Tuesday that he expects to create “an additional 8,000 indirect jobs” with local suppliers and sellers, according to external analysis. Emails acquired earlier this year showed that Rivian was already demanding existing suppliers whether to set up businesses near the Georgian plant.

While the event was a part of charm, it represents an important milestone for the project, which is surrounded by a lot of uncertainty in recent years.

Rivian announced plans for the first time to build a factory in Georgia shortly after its IPO in 2021. At that point, the company had spent years renovated an old Mitsubishi plant in Normal, Illinois, to launch the production of the R1T, R1S SUV and commercial truck. But the size of the Illinois plant limits how many vehicles could be done there. Rivian wanted something bigger.

Rivian promised to invest about $ 5 billion in the Georgian plant and wanted to move quickly: the company was initially trying to start construction in 2022.

However, the local opposition to the plant, along with the challenges of the supply chain caused by the pandemic, was forced to remove its attention from Georgia for a while. In March 2024, the company announced that it had officially delayed Georgia’s work in favor of expanding the Illinois plant, so that it could launch the production of the next generation vehicle, the most attractive R2 SUV, in time.

Rivian prioritized the plans of the Georgian plant again at the end of 2024, when it announced it was close to securing a loan of $ 6.6 billion from the Ministry of Energy to help fund the construction. This agreement was completed in the last days of the presidency of Joe Biden, although the funds will not be distributed to Rivian until some milestones succeed.

In the weeks that led to Donald Trump’s second term, some of the president’s allies who would soon aim at the Rivian plant as a project that could aim for the incoming administration. Vivek Ramaswamy, who at one point is supposed to coincide with the efficiency of the Elon Musk ministry ministry, arrived until he said that the administration could try nail back the loan.

However, the Rivian loan remained intact and the company worked closely with the office of the Governor of Georgia in recent months, once again returning businesses. The company has big plans for the new factory, with Scaringe telling CNBC on Tuesday that hoping he will do so Create vehicles for a global market Come 2028.
