The launch of Sora for Android is off to an auspicious start. On its first day on the Google Play Store, the AI video app from ChatGPT maker OpenAI saw around 470,000 downloads across all markets where it was available, according to new estimates from the app intelligence provider Appfigures.
That makes Android more than four times the size of iOS, with 327% more installs (360,000) — but the company notes that this isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison.
On iOS, Sora was only available in the US and Canada and was by invitation only.
Sora on Android, however, is available in the US, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam, and OpenAI rejected the invitation request at the end of October for its top markets.
The app has been very successful since its debut, despite its previous exclusive status. The iOS app achieved over one million installs within the first week and quickly rose to the top of the App Store. Today, it still ranks as the No. 4 app on the US App Store’s top free iPhone charts.
With Sora, users leverage artificial intelligence to make videos using prompts. These videos can also include users and their AI-animated friends through a feature known as Cameos. The videos are scrollable in a TikTok-like vertical feed so you can see what other users are doing with the technology.
Appfigures has also revised its previous estimates for the early iOS downloads of the Sora app. Initially, the models told her that the app had about 56,000 downloads on the first day. Now that more time has passed, the model can more accurately predict that the number was closer to 110,000, with about 69,300 of those being U.S. facilities.
By comparison, the Sora Android app saw about 296,000 installs in the US, out of 470,000 total, suggesting there’s still interest in the AI video maker even after the initial iOS rollout.
Sora also competes with Meta AI, which launched its mobile app to European users today, following its previous debut in the US.
