Long before Zohran Mamdani became the 112th mayor of New York City, he realized that if you want to reach new voters, you have to meet them online.

Now, in classic Mamdani fashion, the mayor has taken that strategy even further. on Thursday, Polygon It was exclusively revealed that Mamdani is launching a recurring Twitch live stream series titled “Discussion with the People,” will premiere Thursday, May 21 at 4:10 p.m. ET, where he will answer questions directly from viewers via Twitch chat. It will also be simulcast on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Xand Bluesky.

More than 10,000 people tuned in for the original stream as Mamdani answered questions from viewers live via Twitch chat, creating a rare direct line between a politician and an online audience. A surprise addition to the stream was the influencer Moosewho joked with Mamdani and helped him navigate Twitch culture, including teaching him to address viewers as “chat.”

Whether Twitch is the right platform for serious political discussion is still up for debate, but it created a relaxed atmosphere where Mamdani connected with viewers rooting for a Knicks win and discussing the best tacos in New York, with shout-outs to Los Tacos No. 1 and Taqueria Ramirez. There have also been some serious discussions, such as raising taxes on the rich and his push for free and faster public buses, including plans to speed up journeys by six minutes.

Overall, it was a good first introduction to Mamdani’s career on Twitch and speaks volumes about the changing relationship between politics and the internet. Younger audiences are increasingly consuming political information through creators, streamers, podcasts and online personalities rather than traditional media.

Twitch in particular has evolved far beyond gaming in recent years, becoming a surprisingly influential political platform where audiences watch current events debates in real time, such as influencers like Hasan Piker. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez famously embraced the platform in 2020 when she participated in Among Us live streams aimed at encouraging young people to vote.

In a statement to Polygon, Mamdani said, “By launching the nation’s first multi-platform repeat stream hosted by an elected official, where I’ll answer New Yorkers’ questions live on Twitch, we’re opening a direct line of conversation between our government and the people, especially younger generations who have been ignored for too long.”

Yesterday, Mamdani teased the move Instagram with the caption: “5/21/26. 4:10pm. Live.” Moving on to the next image he gave followers a bigger idea with an image of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s famous fireside chats, while FDR’s radio broadcasts used to speak directly to Americans in their homes.

The comparison seems appropriate. Just as Roosevelt embraced radio as the defining communication technology of his time, Mamdani seems intent on shrinking the distance between government and the public by showing up where people now spend much of their time online.

The new live-streaming series is named after Mamdani, whose political rise has been closely tied to social media from the beginning. Before becoming mayor, he built a reputation on the New York political scene as a chronically online elected official. As a member of the New York State Assembly representing Astoria, Mamdani became known for occasional videos explaining housing policy, transit issues and affordability in plain language. His clips regularly went viral among younger voters who might normally drift to the right of traditional political messages.

Over time, Mamdani has built one of the strongest social media followings in urban American politics, amassing a combined total of over 15 million followers on Instagram, TikTok, and X.
