Weeks after OpenAI introduced a new family of chat models and updated ChatGPT’s voice functionality, rival Anthropic is making its move to make Claude more voice-friendly with a new update. The company said Thursday that users can choose between Opus, Sonnet and Haiku models.
Claude’s voice mode, which was released last year and was powered by the Haiku model, provided quick responses but wasn’t suitable for complex tasks. The company said that with the new update, the voice feature picks the last model people used in text chat and uses its fastest version by default.
Anthropic said the new voice feature can help users with longer conversations, including providing feedback on their communication style, speaking through a tone to a customer and brainstorming product market research.
Additionally, Claude’s voice feature can use other apps like Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Canva, and Notion. This means users can ask it to update a meeting slot, compose an email, or create a document in Notion.
Notably, this is a big difference from OpenAI’s voice feature, which updated its conversational style but still can’t use different tools to get the job done.


Earlier this year, Anthropic added multilingual support to Claude’s voice feature in beta. He said that now users can speak in different languages, but they have to manually specify the language. Anthropic currently supports English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), and Spanish (Latin America/Spain).
The new voice feature is available to all users in beta on all platforms. However, free users will be limited to using the Haiku model with only one connected app.
Anthropic hasn’t made any changes to the voice model with this release and hasn’t specified what kind of voice stack it uses. This means that, unlike the OpenAI version, users may not find chat improvements such as better interrupt handling.
