After years of promises and limited testing, Meta has begun providing default end-to-end encryption protection for Messenger. In his announcement, Mark Zuckerberg he said that personal chats and calls will receive end-to-end encryption by default. However, encryption for group chats is still an option.

End-to-end encryption is an important layer of security, as it prevents Meta or other third-party entities from accessing the content of a conversation.

“This took years to deliver because we took our time to get it right. Engineers, cryptographers, designers, policy experts, and product managers worked tirelessly to rebuild Messenger’s features from the ground up,” said Meta’s Head of Messenger, Loredana Crisan. a blog post.

Meta first introduced end-to-end encryption to Messenger in a limited test in 2016 through a “secret chats” feature. In 2021, the company brought encryption for voice and video calls to the app. The social networking giant began providing an end-to-end encryption option for group chats and calls in January 2022. In August 2022, Meta began testing end-to-end encryption for individual chats. In August 2023, the company said it plans to roll out default end-to-end encryption by the end of the year.

Get him engineering blogMeta said the development of end-to-end encryption – for which it uses the Signal protocol – took a long time to roll out because the company had to rebuild some features, such as the sticker library and chat storage, from scratch.

With this release, Messenger will be one step closer to achieving full end-to-end protection like another Meta-owned WhatsApp chat app. In August, the company also said that Instagram DMs will get end-to-end encryption protection after Messegner launches.

In addition to this security update, Meta is also rolling out new features for Messenger, including the ability to edit a message up to 15 minutes after sending. speed control for voice prompts to play these audio clips at 1.5x or 2x. new photo and video layouts. and a new interface for disappearing messages. The company also said it is working on the ability to send HD photos and videos to Messenger.
