When it comes to climate -related investments, lion’s share has gone to companies working in energy and transport. Most investors overlook the real lions-that is, nature-based solutions, such as biodiversity, tend to take a short shrift in the investment world. Just $ 35 billion was invested in nature -based solutions in 2022, compared to 1.46 trillion $ for the rest of the climate funding sector.
To deal with the deficit, Just climate It has raised $ 175 million from Microsoft’s climate innovation fund and Calstrs.
Climate is a decline in Al Gore’s investment management. Until the current year, it was focused on what it calls industrial solutions for the climate, as did most other private air conditioning investors.
The new fund will focus on natural climate solutions, which could include everything from agriculture to forestry. Nature -based solutions face greenhouse gas sources that usually fall into agriculture, forestry and land use, which represent together about 15% of the annual world broadcasts.
But nature -based solutions can also eliminate carbon dioxide already in the atmosphere. The reforestation projects are developing new trees on degraded land, isolating carbon in the wood. For example, Microsoft has recently invested in such a startup, Chestnut Carbon.
The new fund aims to restore nature to reverse the loss and broadcasting of biodiversity from land use. The company mentions some examples of possible investment, including organic fertilizers and pesticides, rehabilitation funding platforms and technologies that verify carbon reduction and biodiversity protection.
Climate’s first investment, which took place in January, led to a round of Naturemetrics funding. The company determines the biodiversity of a place by detecting the known as EDNA or the environmental DNA, which is free DNA located in water or soil samples.
