From Monday afternoon, Google Maps users in the United States will see the name of the Gulf of Mexico that has changed to be the Gulf of America. International users will see both names, while Mexican users will only see the Gulf of Mexico. Google has already stated in January that it will comply with Trump’s executive order as soon as the names of places were informed in the United States’ geographical names system.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said he would send a letter to Google by questioning the company’s decision to rename Mexico Gulf to Google Maps. However, Google’s decision to change the name of the Gulf is in line with its existing policies on how to navigate the name of differences between countries. On mobile, Google changes maps to align with the location of the user’s country, determined by the operating system, SIM and the user’s network.
While Google has complied with Trump’s order, Apple has not yet updated the name of the Gulf of Mexico or Denali in the MAPS app. When searching for “Gulf of America” on Apple maps, the application did not work.
Google Sundar Pichai’s CEO and Apple Tim Cook’s chief executive watched the inauguration of Trump. Cook personally Donation $ 1 million to Trump’s opening fund, while Google also made $ 1 million contribution.
