Anthropogenic co -founder and leader of science Jared Kaplan said his company had cut Windsurf’s immediate access to Anthropic’s Claude AI models, mainly because of rumors and reports that Openai, his biggest competitor, acquires AI coding assistant.
“We are really trying to allow our customers who are going to work with us in the future,” Kaplan told a techcrunch interview on Thursday with TechCrunch at TC Sessions: AI 2025.
“I think it would be strange to sell Claude to Openai,” Kaplan said.
Comment comes just a few weeks after reporting Bloomberg Openai acquired windsurf for $ 3 billion. Earlier this week, Windsurf said Anthropic reduced his immediate access to Claude 3.5 Sonnet and Claude 3.7 Sonnet, two of the most popular AI models for coding, forcing the start to find third -party computer providers in a relatively short period of time. Windsurf said he was frustrated by Anthropic’s decision and could cause short -term volatility for users trying to access Claude through Windsurf.
Windsurf refused to comment on Kaplan’s observations, and an Openai spokesman did not immediately respond to TechCrunch’s request. Companies have not confirmed rumors of acquisition.
Part of the reason why Windsurf’s access to Claude, according to Kaplan, is due to the fact that the company is quite limited computing today. Anthropic would like to maintain his calculation for what Kaplan was described as “constant partnerships”.
However, Kaplan said the company hopes to significantly increase the availability of models it can offer users and developers in the coming months. He added that the man had just begun to unlock the ability in a new cluster computing by his partner, Amazon, who says it is “really big and continues to escalate”.
As the human being removed from Windsurf, Kaplan said he is working with other customers who manufacture AI coding tools, such as Runner – a company Kaplan said Anthropic is expecting to work together for a long time. Kaplan rejected the idea that the man was in competition with companies such as the runner, who develops his own AI models.
In the meantime, Kaplan says that Anthropic is increasingly focusing on the development of his own coding products, such as the Claude Code, instead of the experiences of AI Chatbot. While companies such as Openai, Google and Meta compete for the most popular AI Chatbot platform, Kaplan said the Chatbot standard restricts due to its static nature and that AI agents would be much more useful for users.
