Meta Mark Zuckerberg’s chief executive announced on Friday that former Openai researcher Shengjia Zhao will lead to research efforts at the company’s new AI unit, Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). Zhao has contributed to several of Openai’s biggest discoveries, including Chatgpt, GPT-4, and the company’s first AI logic model, O1.

“I am excited to share that Shengjia Zhao will be the head scientist at Meta Superintelligence workshops,” Zuckerberg told a Yarn publication Friday. “Shengjia founded the new lab and was our lead scientist from day one. Now that our recruitment is going well and our team is coming together, we have decided to formalize its leadership role.”

Zhao will set a research agenda for MSL led by Alexandr Wang, former CEO of Scale AI, who was recently hired to drive the new unit.

Shengjia is a brilliant scientist who recently led a new model of escalation in his research. It will lead our scientific direction for our team.

Wang, who has no research background, was considered as a somewhat unusual choice to drive a AI lab. The addition of Zhao, who is a credible leader of the research known for the development of AI Frontier models, completes the leadership team. To further complete the unit, Meta has hired several high -level researchers from Openai, Google Deepmind, Safe Superintelligence, Apple and Humanity, as well as pulling researchers from the existing AI Research (FAIR) and AI genetic unit.

Zuckerberg notes in his place that Zhao pioneered several discoveries, including a “new example of escalation”. Meta’s chief executive is likely to mention Zhao’s work on the Openai Reasoning Model, O1, which he refers to as fundamental contributors along with co -founder Openai Ilya Sutskever. Meta does not currently offer a competitor to O1, so AI logic models are a key focus space for MSL.

The information mentioned in June that Zhao will participate post -Superintelligence Labs workshopsAlong with three other influential researchers Openai – Jiahui Yu, Shuchao Bi and Hongyu Ren. Meta has also recruited Trapit Bansal, another Openai researcher who worked on AI reasoning models with Zhao, as well as three employees from Zurich’s office of Openai who worked in multimodes.

Zuckerberg has passed a great deal to set MSL for success. Meta’s chief executive was in a hiring spree for the AI Superintelligence staff, which entails sending personal emails to researchers and inviting prospects to Lake Tahoe Estate. Meta is reportedly offered to some researchers eight and nine numbers compensation packages, some of which are “explosive offers” This ends in a few days.

Meta has also increased its investment in Cloud Computing infrastructure, which will help help MSL run the huge training routes needed to create competing AI models.

By 2026, Zhao and MSL researchers should have access to 1 Gigawatt Cloud Computing Cluster, Prometheus, located in Ohio. Once online, Meta will be one of the first technology companies with a AI cluster of Prometheus’ size – 1 Gigawatt is enough to supply more than 750,000 homes. This will help META run the huge training routes needed to create AI Frontier models.

With the addition of Zhao, Meta now has two lead scientists AI, including Yann Lecun, leader of Meta’s Fair Lab. Unlike MSL, Fair is designed to focus on the long-term AI-technical research that can be used five to 10 years from now. How will Meta’s three AI units work.

Nevertheless, Meta seems to have a terrible AI leadership team to compete with Openai and Google.
