In a move reminiscent of the early days of Facebook, Tiktok begins a new feature that allows students to find and connect with others to their campus. The feature, called campus verification, allows users to add their college campus to their Tiktok profile and browse a list of students to their school.
To access the operation, users need to navigate their profile and press the “Add School” button. From there, they must enter the name of their school and then choose their graduation year.
To verify that they are really going to the school they entered, they must give their academic e -mail address. Once completed, the college name and the year of graduation will appear on their profile.
Users can then browse their school page, filter the year of graduation and see all users who have added the school to their profile. They can also sort the list of users to show first the most followed users.
The feature is available in more than 6,000 universities through Tiktok’s cooperation AnonymousA student verification platform that confirms students’ status.
Tiktok says the idea behind the feature is to turn its platform into a hub for real world connections and to belong to the campus, which is essentially what the original Facebook mission was when it started in 2004 as a way for Harvard students to connect to each other.
The new feature of Tiktok could be a welcome addition to students who want to connect with others to campus. However, it also raises concerns about digital privacy, as it could make it easier for users to watch others online. Of course, the feature is optional, so that those who prefer to maintain their presence Tiktok separately from their student life may choose not to add their school to their profile.
