OpenAI teases a series of updates coming to its viral AI-generated video app, Sorawhich recently reached the top of the App Store after a release in late September. The app, which remains No. 1 in the US and Canada, will introduce video editing tools, allow users to create character cameos from pets and other objects, improve social features and more. In addition, the company says that the Android version of the app “will come real soon”.
The announcement was made in X from Sora head Bill Peebles, who says the new creation tools will arrive in the coming days. These include the ability to turn pets and other items, such as a “favorite stuffed toy and just about anything else,” into cameos.
the term “cameo” refers to the Sora feature where users can make AI faces after giving the app a recorded video as a reference file. These cameos can be shared with friends and others, allowing them to make videos with your AI character.
“We expect people to register a lot of crazy new cameos with this feature. To make them easier to find, we’re updating the generation UI to display the latest trending cameos in real time,” Peebles wrote on X.
In addition, he says the app will introduce basic video editing features, starting with stitching together multiple clips. More tools will be added over time. An updated social experience is also in the works, which will add new ways to use Sora with friends. These may include exclusive channels specific to a university, company, sports club and more.
The company says it’s working to reduce generational over-moderation, which some users have complained is too strict, and improve the app’s overall performance.
Although the app is currently listed on the Google Play Store for pre-registration, OpenAI has yet to share a release date for its arrival. Peebles says it should be out “soon,” but didn’t elaborate.

Third-party app store data from Appfigures estimates that Sora has seen around 2 million downloads since its launch less than a month ago. This number is remarkable considering that the app remains invite-only and only available in the US and Canada.
