Meta Cto Andrew “Boz” Bosworth, who was one of the first 15 engineers of the company, published a note earlier this year, predicting that 2025 could be the year of Greatness for reality labs, the company’s enhanced and virtual reality. Or, it would be the year that Metaverse is reduced as “legendary mistreatment”.

These days, Boz seems to be leaning towards his potential for greatness. But the market will be the final decisive factor.

“We will judge at the end of the decade, but that feels like the basic year,” Boz said on Thursday during a Bloomberg technology interview.

Boz noted that Meta’s Ray Ban Ai glasses were an important discovery that was thrilled by both consumers and competitors. Since February, Meta has sold More than 2 million pairs From their October 2023 debut. Last fall, they surpassed traditional Ray headphones, even before Meta began the features of AI.

Meanwhile, Google last month announced collaborations with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker to create smart glasses based on Android XR. Reportedly Apple has pushed Release smart glasses in 2026.

“Suddenly, we go from passing through the bullets of obscurity to be very much in the world with a product that is very attractive to consumers and so competitors,” Boz said. “The clock has begun to come in for competition and that simply means that the progress we make in this year is disproportionate value in any year before or after closing.”

However, competition, among other established actors, does not mean anything if the market does not adopt META AR and VR products, which would lead the industry to standardize technology.

“The market is actually, especially when it comes to material, a potential index,” Boz said. “So you are looking for early indicators. To some extent, you must have a level of trust and taste at home.”

He said this was something he learned from Sheryl Sandberg, a former CEO of Meta.

“Sheryl always used to talk about how most companies do not fail because they were hit by a competitor,” Boz said. “Most companies fail because they did not properly execute their own plan. And so what I am trying to do with the team is really focusing us, not both on the competitive landscape and [whether] We execute our standards. ”

The Meta CTO said the company has “an ensemble of ambitious plans for the year” for which it is on track.

“What we will know by the end of the year is whether we executed in our plan or not,” Boz said. “What we will know in five years is if that was enough.”
