Consumer demand for alternatives to the social applications of Big Tech heating. Alternative social networks such as Bluesky and Mastodon gain attraction with people who want to leave X, while others are manufacturing Tiktok alternatives from Ban open to open protocols. Similarly, many independent developers also work on open, decentralized alternatives on Instagram, Meta’s Sharing Photo Sharing app with over 2 billion monthly active users.
While none of the newcomers are ready to compete with the size and scope of the Meta, their ability to carve a small position in the Meta shade is imperative. They also arrive at a time when investors have begun to get knowledge of the growing open social fabric. Gen Z, meanwhile, have recently marked that they were more likely to leave Tiktok for another Chinese social application rather than returning to Instagram.
Below are some of the applications working to build Instagram alternatives in open protocols such as Bluesky’s in Protocol and ActivityPub, used by Mastodon and others.
Melotoma
Although not a new service, the photo sharing site released in January launched official mobile apps for iOS and Android. The app is built on ActivityPub, used by Mastodon, a YouTube competitor called Peertube and many others, including threads and Meta flipboard (plus the latest application, surf). Together, these applications form what is called “fediverse”, a reference to the federal servers that make up it.
Similar to Instagram, Pixelfed allows users to share and explore photos and videos and send immediate messages. However, unlike Instagram, Pixelfed is without ads, open source, decentralized and defaults to chronological foods-which are points of sale to users.
Within its first two days on the market, Pixelfed mobile applications have completed 10,000 downloads, developer Daniel Supernault said At Mastodon.

BlinksAn alternative to Instagram built over the Bluesky social network opened its doors to beta testers just last week. Like Bluesky, the app runs in the protocol and is limited to the same Bluesky image and video requirements, which means up to 4 photos per post and video up to a minute.
Since they are essentially a first Bluesky photo customer, the users publishing in flashes will have their seats appear on Bluesky, while Bluesky users’ comments will also appear in these posts. The application is part of a third Bluesky customer manufactured by SEBASTIAN VOGELSANG developer, which also includes a twitter -like application Sloping and a video app Sharp. After all, the idea is to offer high quality subscriptions that cover these applications, allowing people to change between customers.
Pink

Another Bluesky customer, Pinksky, also faces the idea of offering a first picture of the social network. Designed to attract former Instagram users who want to connect via photos instead of the content or roles of the virus, the application has a well -known interface environment – including a tappable stories section at the top. But unlike new applications built from scratch, Pinksky users can use their existing network of friends and fans from Bluesky, even if these people are not Pinksky users.
At present, the app is just a Bluesky customer, but if there is enough demand, Pinksky can be expanded to include other technologies, such as integration with ActivityPub or Nostr. So far, the application is free to use, although it can later add premium features if it increases enough to support revenue.
Sky

Currently a project in progress, Sky It is an internet -based application designed to provide a more photoco -centric bluesky experience. Inside Skygram, users can change between interest -based power on top of the screen, such as gardening, dogs and others, for example. Still quite elementary, Skygram code is available Github As the work continues.
