The American Edtech Giant Powerschool confirmed that 16,000 students in the United Kingdom had personal and sensitive data stolen during December 2024 data breach.

This week, Powerschool began alerting people outside the US and Canada affected by violation. The incident, first confirmed by Powerschool in January, saw hackers access the personal data of millions of students and teachers after using compromised credentials to violate the company’s customer support gate.

Powerschool has not confirmed how many international students have been affected. However, in an electronic statement on TechCrunch, Powerschool spokesman Beth Kebler confirmed that four schools were affected in the United Kingdom, with hackers accessing the data of “about 16,000 students”.

In a letter sent to people influenced outside the US and Canada, seen by TechCrunch, Powerschool stated that access data includes students’ contact details, birth dates, limited medical data and “other relevant relevant information”.

Keebler told TechCrunch that “the information was outraged for any given person who varies throughout our customer base”. Powerschool refused to name the UK schools affected by the incident.

About the company eventwhich was offline at the time of the publication, Powerschool noted that it would not provide credit monitoring services to victims of data outside the US and Canada.

Lucy Milburn, a spokesman for the UK Commissioner’s Office (ICO), told TechCrunch that she had not received a data breach report from Powerschool.

Keeber confirmed that the company had not submitted a data breach report to ICO, arguing that this is due to the fact that Powerschool “does not act as a data controller” – an organization that defines the purpose and means of processing personal data – in accordance with the law On UK data protection.

TechCrunch arrived at ICO with further questions about the claim of Powerschool.

Powerschool has not yet confirmed the total number of people affected by the December violation, despite the fact that TechCrunch had “identified schools and areas of which the data participated in this incident”.

According to reportsViolation influenced the personal and sensitive data of more than 62 million students and 9.5 million teachers. Powerschool has repeatedly refused to confirm whether this number is accurate, but on its website the company says its technology is used by more than 60 million students.
