Capping off a tumultuous weekend at OpenAI that culminated with investors — and a group of employees — trying to convince the company’s board to rehire former Y Combinator president Sam Altman after he was fired on Friday, Altman will not return as CEO Counselor, according to one report in Information.

Citing an internal memo sent by Ilya Sutskever, director of the board and one of OpenAI’s co-founders, Altman decided to drop out of negotiations — at least for now. As the search for a new permanent CEO continues, OpenAI has appointed Emmett Shear, the co-founder of video streaming site Twitch, as interim CEO — replacing Mira Murati, who held the position for only two days.

Board won over by Shear’s concern over existential threats posed by artificial intelligence, Bloomberg Referencesas well as his experience leading large engineering teams while at Twitch.

Murati is said to have been strongly supporting for Altman and was plotting a way to hire him in some capacity, even as the six-member board considered potential new CEOs, which could have something to do with her replacement. We’ve reached out to OpenAI for comment and will update this piece if we hear back.

This latest development threatens to worsen an already precarious situation for OpenAI, whose board is facing pressure from all sides to change course after Altman was fired with minimal input from some of its largest shareholders.

The board’s decision Friday night to oust Altman — and demote OpenAI chairman and co-founder Greg Brockman, who has since resigned, as chairman — reportedly angered Satya Nadella, the chief executive consultant to Microsoft, major supporter and partner of OpenAI. (Nadella was said to play a key mediating role between the board and Altman, and pledged to support Altman regardless of the outcome.) OpenAI Investors — at particular Tiger Global, Sequoia Capital and Thrive Capital — had recruited Microsoft’s help in lobbying the board to bring back Altman and Brockman while the lawsuit against the board members is considered.

Meanwhile, OpenAI top brass and the Altman-aligned rank-and-file left. Three senior OpenAI researchers left after Brockman, including director of research Jakub Pachocki and head of readiness Aleksander Madry. Others threatened to leave unless both Altman and Brockman were reinstated.

So what started all the chaos? That is, a clash of philosophies.

Sutskever said during a company meeting on Friday that he felt Altman’s removal was “necessary” to protect OpenAI’s mission to “make artificial intelligence beneficial to humanity,” suggesting that Altman’s commercial ambitions for the company began to worry the kings of the board. Reports over the weekend confirmed as much. Suitskever it was said to be “outraged” by some announcements at OpenAI’s first annual developer conference, DevDay, such as custom GPTs that OpenAI has said may one day work autonomously

Altman reportedly demanded “significant” management changes at OpenAI — and a new board — as a condition for his return. The Wall Street Journal References that Altman told his partners it was “ridiculous” that major shareholders had no say in OpenAI’s governance. Bret Taylor, the co-CEO of Salesforce, was among those being considered for the new board, reportedly, along with a Microsoft member (or alternatively a board observer).

Bloomberg’s Emily Chang References that Microsoft isn’t happy with Sunday night’s result — and that’s not exactly surprising. Volatility over OpenAI sent Microsoft shares down 1.7% on Friday, wiping out nearly $47 billion in market value.

Many employees are not either. Dozens of executives internally was announced had left OpenAI late Sunday night, The Information reported
