Can't Decide Between Bluesky, Mastodon And Nostr? Nootti's New App

Managing a social presence these days can be difficult. It’s even tougher for those experimenting with the new wave of Twitter-like services like Mastodon, Nostr and Bluesky, where staying active means lots of duplicate posts on different networks. Fortunately, developers are starting to address our needs for cross-posting tools. Apart from scheduling services like Fedica and Postponethere is now a new app, Noottiwhich allows you to publish to Mastodon, Nostr and Bluesky from one interface.

While we’re still waiting for the release of multi-service social media and news trackers like Tapestry, Nootti’s iOS app can at least save you some effort when you want to share a post with your followers on three of the most popular Twitter/X alternatives. Additionally, using Apple’s native “Share via…” option, you can post the same message to any other apps you choose, such as X or Meta’s Threads. (A clever solution, given that the Threads API is not yet open and X is too expensive for independent developers.)

Nootti, whose name is Finnish for “note,” is pretty bare. It won’t offer all the bells and whistles that come with posting directly to the platforms themselves, such as the ability to add polls and alt text to images or get hashtag suggestions like in Mastodon. However, if you have a simple text (or text-plus-media) post, Nootti is capable. As you type in the text input box, Nootti counts how many characters you have left. You can also upload media from the Camera Roll if you choose, then tap the folder icon to send the post on its way.

To use Nootti, you must first configure your accounts in settings. (Note that you can use an app password for Bluesky, instead of your master password, even though this option isn’t written into the app.)

What makes Nootti exciting is that you can easily customize each post slightly for the different platforms. To do this, first type your post in the “Main” tab, then go to the tabs for the other social networks. The post will auto-populate on each tab, but you can edit the message for individual networks. For example, you can take a more playful air with your Bluesky posts while adding hashtags to your Mastodon posts. When you tap the folder icon, the custom set of messages is published to all three networks at once.

Developer Petri Kajander says he built Nootti for himself.

“The current state of social media is reconstruction, and if you just wait, it won’t change the status quo. You have to be active to be part of the change,” he says. “A lot of people have stopped posting altogether or are only in one place. This means you have to expand your presence to many places, but it takes a lot of time. Since none of the networks is a clear winner, the best strategy is to post in multiple places but keep engagement local to that network and also tailor each post to each platform,” Kajander adds.

He explains that he doesn’t believe in auto-posting either, so he wanted an app that required you to write your own posts.

Nootti is a free download on the App Storebut Kajander is now developing the paid version, he says, though he hasn’t yet figured out which revenue model to use.

Kajander said he also hasn’t made a decision about whether to support other networks, such as Threads, or even if that will be required once a federated implementation is made using the ActivityPub protocol. Meanwhile, you can cross-post to any other app with the share button within Nootti.
