ChatGPT’s growth is starting to slow, according to new data from the market intelligence firm Sensor tower. Today, OpenAI’s chatbot AI remains the leader in the space, accounting for 50% of global mobile downloads and 55% of global monthly active users. However, Google’s Gemini has begun to surpass ChatGPT in terms of increase in downloads, increase in monthly active users and increase in time spent in apps, according to the company.

Over time, this increased adoption rate could help Gemini close the gap with ChatGPT. This is something that OpenAI is concerned about now, as of late “Code Red” legend. is indicated. The mission, written by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, instructed staff to focus on improving the company’s AI products, particularly in areas such as personalization, trustworthiness, image creation and more.

Looking at recent data, it’s clear the race isn’t over yet: Both ChatGPT and Gemini continue to see significant growth.

ChatGPT saw its global monthly active users grow 180% year-over-year from November 2025, while Gemini’s monthly active users grew 170%.

However, the new data shows that ChatGPT’s global monthly active users only grew by about 6% from August to November, reaching about 810 million. (The monthly active user numbers in the chart above are rounded, the company notes.) That number could indicate that chatbot AI is nearing market saturation, says Sensor Tower.

Meanwhile, Google Gemini’s global monthly active users grew by around 30% over the same time period, as the launch of its new image production model, Nano Banana, led to increased adoption.

In addition, the report noted that approximately twice as many US Android users now engage with Gemini directly through the Android operating system compared to using the standalone Gemini mobile app. This could give Google a competitive advantage in the Android-dominated global market, as it means Gemini isn’t limited to being used in just a mobile app or web interface.

Gemini also increases its share of the overall AI chatbot market compared to all the top apps like ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, Perplexity and Grok. Over the past seven months (May-November 2025), Gemini has increased its share of global monthly active users by three percentage points, the company estimates.

However, ChatGPT has seen its share of global monthly active users decline by three percentage points over the past four months (August-November 2025), by comparison.

Challenges from Perplexity and Claude may also affect ChatGPT, as both rivals saw triple-digit growth for their respective chatbots in 2025, with the former growing 370% year-over-year and the latter growing 190%.

ChatGPT also saw its global downloads grow by 85% year-on-year since November, but this fell short of the overall cohort’s average increase of 110%.

Perplexity and Gemini saw the biggest growth, 215% and 190% year-over-year, respectively.

Finally, the amount of time Gemini app users spend on the app has more than doubled in recent months, Sensor Tower said. As of November, Gemini users were spending 11 minutes a day on the app, a 120% increase from March. This is probably due to the popularity of the image production model, Nano Banana, in September.

ChatGPT’s daily user time only increased by 6% over the same time period. In addition, the time spent by ChatGPT users decreased by 10% in November, compared to July.

While current data suggests that Google could be closing in on the market leader, much of its recent gains have to do with the success of the Nano Banana. OpenAI could accelerate growth again with the release of its own new products if they have a similar impact.
