Technically, Poke never really left Facebook.

The classic feature from the early days of Facebook allows users to get a friend’s attention with a virtual push of species. While Poke has fallen out of use a long time ago, the company has recently seen a uppick in its use among the younger users, which has now prompted to make Poke a more central part of the Facebook experience.

Now users are able to push their friends from a new, dedicated button directly on their Facebook profile, which will warn Poke’s recipient through their notifications. In addition, Facebook users can see who pushed them and find friends to hit Facebook.com/pokes. On this page, users will be able to watch their “Poke Count” with friends who grow up every time they hit each other. They can also reject Pokes if they do not want to respond.

Poke monitoring ability is largely designed to attract younger users who have grown up with game elements integrated into their social applications such as Snapchat and Ribs tiktok. These features seemly help friends to watch the ones most marked, but the streaks have been subjected to regulatory control and they have even led to lawsuits Because of their addictive nature, as they keep children anchored in applications.

Underlining Poke counts and making the poke more protruding on Facebook, Meta wants to create a similar commitment mechanism. As users increase their poke counts with a friend, different icons will appear next to the friend’s name, such as an emoji fire or “100”, among others.

This is not the first time in recent months that Facebook has tried to revive the poke. In March 2024, the company said it had made it easier for users to find the Poking page through search and would make it easy to push a friend after their search. These minor changes led to a 13x spike to push the month after the changes, Meta said at that time.

As for why you would like to push someone, it is up to users to decide. Facebook never explained the purpose of Poke, leaving it open to interpretation. A poke could be a way to draw one’s attention, flirt, or simply disturb them, depending on the user’s intention.

Poke’s measurements can never become as popular as streaks, but their addition is clearly a message that Meta is trying to enhance Facebook involvement.

According to For research by Jon HaidtAuthor of the “restless generation”, which focused on the possible damage to social media on the development of the children’s brain, Snap had known about the habit of being a habit of streaks for years. An article published with a senior researcher at Nyu Stern, Zach Rausch, included excerpts from internal documents showing that Snap employees were discussing how popular the strips were and how effective they were in driving.

Although Facebook today remains a cash cow for META businesses, feeding its long -term bets in areas such as AI and Metaverse projects, has been criticized for a long time. lack to attract younger users – a demographic that was declining; especially in the US The company tried to regain the youth market with various initiatives, including short-lived, only for the Campus Facebook college, which had been closed in 2022, and more recently, a Gen Z-Focused redesign.
