Hyundai's New Tesla Charging Port Comes Short

“Lucky me”, I thought as I navigated the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 at the last point of a Tesla turbocharger in Palm Springs.

EV didn’t really need juice. But this refreshed compact electric SUV is equipped with Tesla’s Standard Standard Standard Standard. It’s time to try how well it will match Hyundai with the Supercharging Tesla network.

Experience exposed a gap – in the literal sense. And while Hyundai should not bear all the responsibility, it showed how a seemingly good idea does not always translate into the real world.

For example, I turned to the parking lot, opened the charging port on the passenger panel and grabbed the charging cable, located on the cabinet sitting up to the driver of the car.

UH, Hyundai, we have a problem. It didn’t arrive.

I could wait for another tesla to leave its space and use this charging cable, basically taking two spaces, or I could use the navigation in the car to find a charging station equipped with CCS and use the adapter coming by car.

I chose to do with my day as I had plenty of battery, but others might not be so lucky.

The CCS, or the combined charging system, was the model in North America and was used by every automaker except Tesla, which developed its own port and charging station called Northern American Charging Standard or NACS.

The automakers began shifting to Nacs in May 2023, after Ford reached an agreement that would give EV access to more than 12,000 Tesla turbochargers in all the US and Canada. GM followed and within six months almost every automaker had hit a similar deal with Tesla. Access will first be made with an adapter Tesla, but most of these automakers – Hyundai and Kia who included – also agreed to incorporate NACs that charge technology into their future EVs.

2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is one of them.

Of course, it’s not all this is Hyundai’s mistake. The Ioniq 5 always had its charging port on the back of the passengers and the movement would be a suggestion. And Tesla says the problem should be solved by the development of V4 charging stations with larger cables, although his site says: “We encourage all vehicle manufacturers to standardize the load port positions on the rear driver’s side or side co -driver ”.

2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 buyers will have better luck to find a CCS station and use the adapter. Hyundai says Ioniq 5 can reach 10% to 80% of the billing in about 20 minutes in a CCS charger. The same complete will cost you up to 30 minutes on a Nacs charger.

Hyundai makes it a little easier with your choice of $ 400 or charger a charger at Free Charge’s home by buying an Ioniq 5 and those with older Hyundai EV with an inherent CCS port can get a free Nacs adapter through Myyundai owner gateway starting in March.

Hyundai owners will also have access to the scheduled Ionna charging network. The Ionna network, which is expected to have 30,000 NACS and CCS billing points by 2030, is a collaboration between BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Kia, Stelanis and Toyota.

2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5: Larger Batteries, More Row, New Investment

The 2025 Ioniq 5, which will come to SE, SEL, XRT and limited decorations on the back or all wheels, may look like its previous models. But there are some basic differences, starting with the size of the battery.

The standard battery area increases 5 kWh to 63 kWh, while the extensive range is at 84 kWh, an increase of 6.6 kWh. Depending on the combination of motion, battery and lining, you expect to see 245 miles from the low end and up to 318 miles from the Ioniq 5 with the largest battery.

Power power varies, starting from 168 hp and torque of 258 pound torque, increasing in 225 extensive battery pons. The strongest setting is installed in 320 hp and 446 lbs-torque cars with all the largest battery wheels.

Technology upgrades

The 2025 Ioniq 5 also has some new tricks.

The digital key function now works with your phone in a pocket or wallet, a nice upgrade for weighing children, groceries and a drink.

Apple Carplay and Android Auto are now wireless and all models have over-the-air updates.

In addition, Hyundai Pay allows owners to add their credit card to the entertainment system to automatically pay off -road parking. Drivers also receive up -to -date avoidance of conflict of blind signs and parking help.

Let’s get dirty

For those who want a little more adventure with their electric SUV, Ioniq 5 now comes to XRT Trim.

This model is designed to leave the trail a little thanks to a lift of an inch and 29 -inch Continental CrossContact ATR tires for better dirt and over the gravel. This model also gets a ground button on the steering wheel that offers ways for snow, mud and sand.

Hyundai let me relax in a fun loop loop and I found that the car has enough playful in it to cause a smile. The sand function does not turn the traction control all the way – you must manually press the traction control button to do this. It adjusts the properties of the regen brake so that the vehicle does not automatically begin to slow down when you lift. It also separates the 50/50 torque for optimal adhesion.

It is fun to throw it in corners and get a small slip, but the ABS system is large on the sidewalk-it can interfere with traction and off-road distances, allowing no dirt to create in front of the tire.

It would be great if the ways of motion also modify this system. Still, instant electrical torque means that it is easy to reach the throttle and power from one turn and scream towards the next, tighten tails of dirt knot in the process.

XRT is not some kind of rock detection. The total soil clearance is only seven inches – that is, two inches less than a Subaru Forester desert. Off -road geometry, while being better than the Toyota Rav4 Woodland version, is more intended for small obstacles and ripples.

I found the 19.8 -degree approaching angle in my unit and returned with part of the exclusive XRT front fascia that had been a bit enticed. There is no special protection underneath the Battery for the XRT battery, but the angle of departure is a healthy 30 degrees and the car is equipped with two front tow hooks.

Where 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 shines

On the sidewalk, the Ioniq 5 is just as pleasant as it was ever, with zippy acceleration, well -balanced handling and a comfortable route.

Part of my first driving took me to higher altitudes where the tires of all time were placed in the snow test. The car never lost the handle, inspiring confidence in this desert resident.

The 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 starts at $ 43,975, including the destination fee for a SE base model on rear wheels with the standard battery. The off-roady XRT can have for $ 56,875, while a top-of-the-line lining on All-wheel Drive will restore you $ 59,575.

You can get a Ford Mustang Mach-e at a lower starting price and comparable range, and all Mach-e cars are standard equipped with Hands-Free/Eyes-Up Bluecuise Highway Driving Assist. You will pay a subscription fee to use technology, but Hyundai does not offer that.

If you are in a futuristic look, the Kia EV6 is a worthy competitor, especially if you are looking for performance. The GT AWD 576 pony nets and 545 pounds of torque. Yowza.

It is difficult to find wrong with 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5. This refurbished Ioniq 5 maintains its pavement poise and adds a few adventure emotions with the new XRT Trim. But the owners can be found by avoiding Tesla turbochargers despite the built -in Nacs port.
