The iPhone air looks great with its elegant, thin new shape, but you may not want to choose this phone as your daily guide yet.

The new device announced at the Apple material on Tuesday is thinner and lighter than other models, at 5.6 mm with a 6.5 -inch display. But for now, it is also less capable in some areas than the basic iPhone 17 model, which could prevent potential buyers.

For example, the air battery lasts up to 27 hours, while the iPhone 17 lasts up to 30. It also does not have the iPhone 17 ultrawide camera and does not support the macroeconomic photo. The A19 Pro Chip (CPU 6 Core) has GPU 5 core, comparison With the Pro 6-Core. Has one single speaker And there is no SIM socket, as it is esim-only. And for just $ 100 more, you could upgrade to the iPhone 17 Pro ($ 1,099).

Despite these disadvantages, there is something exciting about the air: it implies where the design of iPhone material is going, including new formaries, such as folding.

After all these years, Apple still hunts a thinner iPhone-and not just because it is doing a better device. Apple must experiment on a platform that uses its own technology to improve material design and phone performance.

As an apple explainsThe iPhone air has the most chips designed by Apple on an iPhone, including the A19 Pro (CPU with 5 cores), N1 (wireless networking chip) and new C1x (cell modem). The latter is faster than modem to 16 Pro, but uses 30% less energy, Apple points out. With the architecture of the telephone design around its own silicon, Apple can work in challenges such as battery life and life – things that remain important as phones become more capable in terms of photography, video shooting and even AI.

Battery life, in particular, is a stoppage point for how strong these devices can be made, since battery technology improves slowly from that of other iPhone elements and technologies. Unfortunately, the debut version of the iPhone Air didn’t do things better On this front, as the battery life is worse than that of other models.

Instead, the air should be regarded as a starting point for the iPhone design that could help the company better understand how to optimize battery life for its other forward devices.

In the meantime, Apple suggests that consumers use the Magsafe battery that is connected to the phone now is confident to maximize battery life. Previously, people may have blocked the use of a battery connected to their phone all day but Apple actually encourage saying the air will get a better battery life when the battery remains connected.

Everything for the presentation of the air suggests that efficiency is a key focus. Reports to the term appear half a dozen times in the Apple press release. For example, as Apple notesiPhone air is the most “efficient” iPhone the company has made. It continues to point out exactly why: the new modem, a new way of housing camera to maximize the battery space, redesigned interior architecture, an adaptive function option in Apple’s iOS 26 software and other optimizations.

Air courses and future repetitions will eventually translate throughout the Apple iPhone line and could even pave the way for new format agents, Like the rumored foldable iPhone.

Air is already affecting the design options on Apple’s iPhone Pro.

Apple first added Ceramic Shield 2 to the back of the iPhone air – a design option for the iPhone 17 Pro. The horizontal air camera “bar”, similar to Google’s pixel, also seemingly inspired the IPhone camera layout 17 pro.

Over time, Air could probably become an Apple base model, while the pro remains the upgraded version for users and professionals. This would make room for new devices, such as a foldable or anything else that comes next.
