Remarkable's New Paper Pure Is Good. That's Why I Wrote

For years, its central ethos remarkable was to take you away from screens and create an experience that mimics the feeling of writing with pen and paper. With its new device, the reMarkable Paper Pure, the company continues the trend of creating a device that sits against phones, iPads and laptops. Lacking notifications and multitasking apps, Paper Pure aims to appeal to writers, designers, and researchers looking for distraction-free reading and writing.

When reviewing devices, I usually jot down or record notes in different formats, in different applications, and sometimes on different devices. But since this device is meant for writing, I thought it would be appropriate to write the review itself on the new Remarkable Paper Pure. I have written this entire review on the tablet using the handwriting conversion feature and edited it in WordPress.

The new $399 reMarkable Paper Pure tablet is its successor remarkable 2which was released six years ago. Meanwhile, the company decided to release the $499 Paper Pro with color screen and smaller Paper Pro Move with better portability.

THE Clean paper it goes back to basics with a monochrome screen the size of a laptop. It has 10.3 inches
screen — the same size as the reMarkable 2. But the company changed the resolution to make the screen wider and smaller. This means that more text fits on the horizontal line, both when reading and when writing. I’ve tried the reMarkable 2 before and with the new tablet, the writing experience is cleaner.

In addition to the hardware upgrade, the company included software features that make it easier for you to access content outside of the tablet. Also improved its manual search to allow you to search notes.

A new feature is that you can now sync your calendar with the tablet. This allows you to access the meeting details from the calendar icon on the device and then start taking notes in that meeting pad.

When you’re done, you can convert handwritten notes and share them with one tap. You will receive a link in your email to access these notes and share them with others. When using meeting notebooks for transcripts, I find it helpful to refer back to my notes so I can add thoughts or follow-up questions to ask later.

You can also share your other notes in the same way to access them via email or access them using reMarkable’s new web app.

reMarkable has worked to improve the reading experience from outside with the launch of Paper Pure. Now, you can send an article as a native notebook on the tablet, which makes it easy to highlight sections, add notes, and send it to the web app. (However, I would like the company to send articles in a separate folder by default.)

The device has improved its performance when working with different documents. You can easily integrate Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive to import and export documents. Documents are imported as a notebook where you can edit them.

The device still does not handle PDF files in an ideal way. When I entered the Paper Pure review guide, the edges were cut. While reMarkable supports ePUB, the reading experience is nowhere near that of a dedicated e-reader like the Kindle.

reMarkable’s position is clear: It’s very much a work device for taking notes, sketching ideas, and reading articles or documents. This device will not work as an all-in-one gadget for both reading books and taking notes.

I understand reMarkable’s position as an augmentative device with minimal distracting technology. I also see the appeal of sitting down with a device and jotting down ideas. But once I have these notes, I might want to easily sync them with my other notes and look them up. reMarkable doesn’t need to add additional AI functionality to the device, but it would be interesting to see how the company approaches integration with other AI tools after extracting the notes.

At $399, the device isn’t cheap. But the basic promise of distraction-free writing works. When I’m writing on my MacBook, I’m admittedly distracted by my apps or open tabs, like opening my fridge for snacks. In the past, I’d go to a coffee shop to brainstorm some story ideas, but using an internet-connected device didn’t work. As I used the reMarkable Paper Pure more, I felt comfortable carrying it around to jot down ideas or start rough drafts, and I was more confident that its software could transform my crappy handwriting well, too.

The base model of the $399 Paper Pure comes with a stylus. There’s also a $449 package, which includes a Marker Plus stylus with an eraser function, along with a sleeve sheet in various colors.
