Spotify on Tuesday introduced a way to chat with your friends in an effort to become a more social application.

Users have shared Spotify links for music and podcasts with others outside the platform for years. With its new function, Spotify is pushing users to make more in the application while maintaining the history of common content, so users do not have to look for a song.

When launching, the messages are one-on-one and you can only start a conversation with someone you have previously shared. This means that if you have a cooperation list with someone or have joined jam or mixture, you can start a conversation with them.

This also applies to people in a family or duo plan with you. Once sending a request, you will have to approve it to start a conversation.

In addition to Spotify, if someone sends a Spotify link to you on platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Whatsapp, Snapchat or Tiktok, you can click and approve their request to chat. Alternatively, you can send an invitation link to someone in your contacts.

The company said users should continue to share content outside Spotify and the operation of a new message is a “supplement” to it.

Users can access messages by utilizing their profile images. Talks can be viewed in the messaging section on the Hover line on the left. Users can also react to specific messages using emojis.

The company noted that the messages are encrypted in calm and during transport. However, messages are not protected from end to end encryption. The company is actively controlling messages to determine if they violate its rules. In addition, Spotify said users can report messages and the company will explore these messages against the rules of service and platform.

Last month, Spotify Gustav Södeström Product and Technology Head hints during the company’s quarterly appeal that the experience of mobile consumer will be much more interactive. The new messaging function seems to be a move in this direction.

Spotify releases the possibility of messages both in premium and free users over 16 in selected markets in Latin and South America, only in mobile versions. The company said the trait would expand to the US, Canada, Brazil, the EU, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand in the coming weeks.

Over the years, Spotify has offered only a few social elements, such as being able to follow someone and look at what he is listening to. This has changed with the introduction of features such as comments on podcasts last year and a redesigned flow -focused flow.

Last year, in an interview with TechCrunch, Spotify VP of the Podcast Maya Prohovnik product did not deny the idea that comments could someday be added to the music tracks.

In the past few months, users in social media They have complained that Spotify’s interface is very full of features. My colleague Amanda Silberling, who left Spotify for Apple Music, had a similar problem.

“There is an overwhelming appearance of visual clutter once you need to browse from the Spotify home page in the music you are looking for,” he wrote earlier this month.

While messages may push some to share more content with friends, they could also annoy some who feel the application is overwhelming. Fortunately, you can go to settings> Protection of privacy and socially and turn off messages.
