Seven or eight years ago, anyone who consumes business news may have encountered the phrase “the race to build autonomous vehicles”. In private talks, the execution of companies and the starting founders I spoke sometimes to the commercialization of autonomous vehicle technology as a “race”. The phrase fell on the report at that time – including some of my articles.

What we have learned is that this is not a race as much as a long, curved and fragmented road – which looks more like the fan of an adaptive plain on a track – to develop and prove that technology works and Make the profitable business. It is not a match against others as much as an internal competition with existential bets.

But that does not mean that there are no real battlefields between those working in technology, especially with robbery. Many may highlight the number of cities that a company has started as an index. I believe that while it is useful, it is a little vague and easy to handle.

Two recent news evidence has made me think about closer and specific battlefields in cities: airports and public transport.

The airports were critical to the success of driving companies. Robotia is no different. Today, Waymo offers walks to and from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. And it is clear to unlock more.

This week, Diameter He was allowed to start testing his autonomous vehicles at San Francisco International Airport before the commercial service. This comes just two weeks after Waymo cleared to start trying at near San Jose Mineta International Airport – and as Tesla He is also trying to embrace his way to offer driving-hail service to these airports.

Meanwhile, Waymo and Transit Software Company Via hit a deal This could have extensive consequences for cities. Government services that use VIA software for public transit will be able to fold Waymo’s robbery directly on public transit networks. The first city will be Phoenix Suburb Chandler via the Chandler Flex fleet, in common, a common fleet of vehicles.

This makes sense for the range, although it may not be a cash cow for Waymo in the short term. As a Waymo spokesman explained to me: When a traditional Chandler Flex vehicle is not available, riders may have the option of closing a journey with Waymo. If one chooses to drive with Waymo, Chandler Flex will direct them to the Waymo app to spoil a fully autonomous route at a reduced price of $ 2 or less. At such a low price, it is difficult to see how this will push Waymo’s balance sheet into black.

Still, it’s an important volume game. And through CEO Daniel Ramot reported an interview That he hopes that this is spreading to hundreds of cities.
